    K2, S9900 and 9800 SE

    Hi there,
We're in the UK and we're finding it difficult to find information and prices for these loudspeakers.
Please can someone clarify have the K2 9800 SE been superseded by the S9900 or are the K2 9800 SE's current models and any idea on UK pricing for these speakers?
I have heard the 9800 SE's and they were good, but need to know if they have now been replaced by the S9900?
    Many thanks, Tim.

    Hi there,

Thanks for the link I've already seen the HiFi Bitz advert for the K2 9800 SE's but can't find the S9900, are they a replacement for the 9800 SE's or a smaller scaled down new model as they are smaller than the 9800 and have a different horn component.

I'm using Krell Evo 900's currently into Revel Salon's the orginal ones and I'd like to get it right with the JBl's. I have as I said heard the 9800 SE's and they were very good compared to my Salon's.

Many thanks for you help, Tim.

    Hi Tim,

try sending a PM to Guido, he is a dealer in Germany. I don't think the 9900 are available here in the UK. Japan yes ! A PM to 4313b, who has very close
ties to Northridge may prove productive for the info you seek. Have you heard the TAD ref series Same sort of price and in circles get the thumbs up too !

Good luck and keep us posted

Rich, I don't know why, but here in France the K2 s9900 are available. Harman will present them at the Haute Fidélité audioshow in Paris (17-18 octobre). And I know a shop in Brittany (near Quimper) who sell these at the moment.

    cheers

    Cool, thanks for the info.

    Are you going ?

I was in a town called Hastings-there is a Gent there with the K2 and the new Everest , both imported from from Hong Kong ! The duty here in the the Uk is just bloody extortionate - hence my lovely little westlakes will never land here ! Ther,ll be taxing the bloody air here soon; another poor quality product we'll be stuck with . Sorry, I digress

    Hi there,

Yes I know the gent well and those Everests are something else, so thought I'd start with the K2's. Will PM the dealer re 9900.

But can anyone tell me are they replacements for the 9800 SE's or are there replacments due for the 9800 SE's anytime in the nnear future or are they quite a recent model. I'd hate to buy and then find another model/replacement is on its way?

    Many thanks, Tim.

I am going to Paris. I do not want to miss this show. The new K2 will be powered by Esoteric (amp and source)

At the moment both 9800se and 9900 are on catalog. You can admit that they are not the same price :

    K2 s9800se is +- 30000 € a pair.
    K2 s9900 is +- 40000€ a pair.

The K2-S9900 is the replacement for the K2-S9800 series. They are a step up with the same components as those in the Everest II. The primary differences being the mid has an all new magnesium diaphragm instead of the Be diaphragm in the Everest II and it only has one woofer. The larger magnesium driver is a definite step up over the smaller Be driver in the K2-S9800 series.

Apparently JBL is rolling out the new K2-S9900s in various countries as their local stock of K2-S9800s run out. Here in the US, the 9900s were demo'd at the recent CEDIA show in early September and are now available through JBL Synthesis dealers.

The cost of the new K2-S9900 is a fair amount higher than the older K2-S9800 SE, so that may help you make up your mind, though I'd hold off on the purchase as I feel the 9900 is definitely a superior product.

    Hi there,

Thanks for everyones input, one final question does anyone have an idea of the current second-hand prices for a recent pair of 9800 SE's and I think someone in the US sold two pairs, does someone know what price they went for?

I believe someone sold a pair here in the UK but I haven't been able to find out how much they went for and any pointers would be much appreciated.

    Again many thanks, Tim.

    Good morning Tim,

There was a pair in Northampton that sold for around 8 k a couple of years
back. AndyOz posted details of the sale. The thread should still be in here somewhere.

    Hi Tim,

A pair sold on UK eBay about 2 years ago for just over £7,000. They were standard S9800, not the SE model. The buyer was in France as I recall.

The possibilty of buying them in Japan and shipping back as been discussed here. Not sure if the current exchange rate makes that as attractive any more. I am in the Euro so may be OK if I was serious about buying them, Sterling...not so good?

Last time I checked prices in Japan with him, S9800 were going for about £8k/pair so the arrival of the DD9900 hasn't seen prices drop that much.

I know a member of UK forum that lives in Tokyo and keeps an eye on second hand values (look out for "joel" on the Zerogain forum)

    Tim,

I found the thread discussing that eBay auction. The seller paid £15,000 for them new and they sold for £8,000 after 18 months use (ouch!)
