Retaining Ring Question

I have searched, read and learned much from the many re-edging tutorials here, but I still have a question.

The outer retaining ring as found on my LE14As and many other drivers; is it simply pressed into place and lightly glued or is there a groove type force fit thing going on like old style windshield weather striping?

Simply put, does it just lie there snugly in the detent or is there more to it?
I just don't want to tear or break it during removal as I have never done this style of frame before.

It has a split in it already. Find that and it should peel right out. Nothing but glue holding it in. I've used an Exacto knife to help get it loose.
