    New Turntable

What is the best turntable I can get for around $1,000? Cartridge doesn't necessarily have to be included, but I would appreciate a recommendation on those as well...

Music will be wide range: classic rock, folk, punk...

    Thanks guys.

Well I don't know if that means new or used. But for around a grand I think you should wind up with something pretty nice. Go to the needle doctors website to see alot of new stuff. I like the Music Hall 5 series

For very little more than a kilo buck you should consider the Time Honored "Well Tempered TT" in which every single design element has been addressed.

You will never in your life time ever need to replace this "Well Tempered TT". Mine is simply superb. Check this one out with Grandfather GURU "Steve Schell" who has fabricated a very precision version of the "Well Tempered TT" himself.

I am very happy with mine.

I don't know about a "well-tempered lab" but my cat would have a blast messing with that stringy drive belt!

    Technics?

    Hi,

Always reliable, effective, and affordable: Technics SL-1200 series turntables

Now you've got some $$$ left for a decent cartridge, too!

By a little more, do you mean $3k?

I will have to strongly agree with the above.

I can't say about those Amadeus tables because I've not tried them, but the Well Tempered Classic arm I had on my VPI table worked very well. The Amadeus' do look like they'd be decent decks, but of course listening is the only way to really decide.

    Cartridges

Speaking of turntables, I don't know of anyone who still uses one. I have recovered my Tecknics SL 1300 out of the mothballs and plan to visit my youth once again listening to some of my old vinyl. However my old Stanton cartridge and stylus are probably toast by now, so a new cartridge is in order. Knowing there are many here that listen to vinyl on a regular basis I thought you might recommend something. I am looking for a cartridge that tracks at around 1 gram at a reasonable price. I have looked at some of the available cartridges and have been somewhat overwhelmed by the number. This is why I turn to those who know from experience.
    Thanks for your comments,
    MM

    Hi Marvin,

I suggest you do a site search for the word Grado .

You'll find many positive references made about this manufacturers' cartridges / as well as a few model numbers to consider .

    >< cheers

    Thanks Earl,
Great advice as usual. I have an older Tecknics SL1300 turntable. I read in my research that the Grado Gold 1 is NOT recommended for Tecknics turntables due to hum from the unshielded cartridge. Could this be due to the direct drive system of the Tecknics? I really like this cartridge and I have found where I can get a pretty good deal. Any comment?

    Check this site out.

    Sorry Marvin,

I'm not a turntable user at this time / so I don't have any more to add / hopefully others will / ( Scott Fitlin is the source of my Grado info ) .

    >< cheers
