    4412 or L166 ?

    Those of you who have heard both, or have an opinion, which of these would be to your preference, considering they both appear to be in very good condition from the photos and info. given and they are priced at;

    4412 = $450.00

    L166 = $699.00

    Thanks,
    Joe

    I've had both and SLIGHTLY preferred the L-166
    BUT, its an older technology and not worth $250 more, the 4412 has a titanium HF
    thats much easier to replace than the 066 in the Horizons

    thats high for the L-166's ...I sold all 3 prs of mine @400/set
    and my 4412 for $500

    Thanks. Kinda my thoughts also.But not having heard them and reading other threads about how good some of these older models sound, I don't want to pass up a good thing. I appreciate the opinions of those who have some first hand knowledge. I have heard the 4410's so I have some idea of what the 4412's should sound like?

    good assumption , but WRONG ....4410 & 4412 sound very different ....10 bass is very tight, image fine , many call the 10 "dry/sterile/clinical",,the 12 is
    never tagged with those labels...I found the bass in the L166 better than the 4412 , but some others disagree

    the 4412 MAY sound better sideways rather than upright ...

    I sold my 4412's, L166's..kept the 4410s...the purchase of the 250ti's kinda made the others just moot points....only have 2 ears.

    JBL produced many 3 way "bookshelves" ....I realized that its a question that has no absolute answer, only subjective opinions....,
    BUT, how would YOU rate them (only from what you have actually heard, not read about) ?????

    what I have heard and rating

    1. L166
    2. 4410
    3. 4412
    4. L36
    4. L100 (tie for 4th place)
    6. L80T (kind of a tweener - couldnt put on a shelf)"

    Well as they are all in your top 3 it still leaves me feeling pretty good about my chances.

    I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again.

    I prefer the 166 as well, and that is high. I paid $450 for mine about 5 years ago, and they have stayed in that ballpark.

    If I had to rank the top ten.

    My general picks of what I own and have heard and feel like at this point in time. Each has it's strengths and weaknesses. The Ti equipped models are clinical almost to a fault, but image oh so well and deserve their ranking. Ask me again in a week and there might be something different.

    1. L112
    2. 4410A
    3. L166A
    4. 4412
    5. 4312B
    6. L86
    7. 18Ti
    8. 4310 (early)
    9. L15
    10.L100A

    All ranked below the 250Ti of course...

    Price paid (as I recall)
    1. $680 (new in 1983 in AAFES)
    2. Made $30 selling the Crown amp I got with them
    3. $225 plus $75 for a 122a plus foam
    4. $250 plus foam
    5. $400 (ouch) and still ended up replacing a wonky 2213H
    6. $75
    7. $75
    8. $200, plus $180 for 2 NOS 2105 mids
    9. $40
    10.$225 (sold for $450)
