    what is an attenuator?

like the title says "what is an attenuator?" Why do you use one on a speaker?

Is it just a level reducer for the high frequency driver's protection?

Where/how is the best place to find an Altec 1233 Attenuator, as I have one and would like to locate another one?

    thanks,

    Michael

Just think of it as a volume control for each driver. Most monitors will have one each for all but the bass speaker. They usualy have a "flat" position and maybe +-6db. They are adjusted to the taste of the listener and in some cases can counteract for bright or dull rooms. I do not know where you would fing the Altec device that you are looking for but you could try Ebay.
