    Need Cabinet Maker's Advice

I'm going to have the cabinet pictured below constructed. I've never had any custom wood work done and am seeking advice on what a reasonable price would be for the materials and fabrication. Exterior dimensions are 24 X 16 X 12. Cabinet is constructed out of 3/4 with the front baffle 1 1/2 inches. There is one internal brace. An 11 3/16 inch cutout for the woofer and another cutout for the vent. Maple or Birch with a clear satin finish.

    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

The diagram doesn't specify the vent diameter because I haven't gotten the vent from Parts Express yet. It's a 3" inside diameter vent, so it's probably going to be 3.5" externally.

In case anyone is interested, I'm mating a HiVi M12 woofer:

But before I shell out the dough for the ESS drivers, I'm going to use a Neo8-PDR to make sure my design is sound:

seems like the dimensions set up as 1 x 1.33 x 2. Usually you don't want even multiples of dimensions because of standing waves.

    Additional advice...

That brace will do very little. I would use 2X4s, actually I almost always use 1.5" by 3.5" Finnish birch plywood as my braces. Regardless, you should have some structure that connects the center of the front with the center of the back... if instead of one large rectangular hole in your "shelf", if you put four round or square holes in it leaving a cross in the center it would be significantly better.

Don't look to '70s era and earlier designs as inspiration for cabinet construction... a lot has been learned since those early days.

Good point mech986. I may play around with the dimensions a bit...

Right you are Mr. Widget. I'll re-do the shelf!
