I can't comment much on your plans, but I like the 816VI cabinet that is part of my 9864A Engine. Since I can't find another 9864A, I plan on using separate HF and LF drivers and horns with 816 cabinets. I'd like a pair of the 816VI, but have a line on the standard 816's.

I don't know what a "ral number" is, but if it's some sort of code for mixing the paint...... I don't think so.

They look pretty good. Did you use particle board?

What do you mean by honking? I've heard people mention it in reference to the 811b and 511b high frequency horns.......... not about bass/mid-bass horns, Though.

    816A "honk"

    hoktuna,

I have a pair of 816a enclosures that I got for $25 the pair at atlas audio repair in Pittsburgh PA. They were happy to get them out of the shop, and I can relate. My understanding about these cabs is that they are meant to be massed for sound reinforcement - the LF cutoff for horn loading is at 300Hz, after which they default to bass reflex boxes. They are known to sound somewhat boxy according to Steve Schell on another set of posts on this forum. That was my finding too - there were some boomy frequencies I just could not get rid of even with bracing and agressive EQ.

They are now in my barn and I am using the JELabs open baffle for my 416As. I doubt I will use them again except for outdoor parties where I need a big box that protects the woofers well (and I won't be using the 416s outdoors!)

I have thought about the 360L Onken, which was designed for the 416A, and also about the 620 enclosure and the 612, all of which are also BR boxes but with a much higher volume (size that is) and so perhaps less of the boxiness, especially with the thick felt padding that the Onken specifies.

Ultimately I have kind of given up on perfect, unboxy bass from the 416A family. They are amazing drivers - they barely move at 100dB! - but there is a certain "hardness" in the upper midbass on a lot of material - so much, in fact, that I think a certain amount of midbass forwardness is just part of the driver's DNA, and the OB seems to mitigate it better than any configuration I've tried (including the Altec Valencia ported box, which is very close in volume to a 612).

    Good luck !

    Than

    altec 816

I've got two altec 816's who i combine with two Tannoy Puma dualconcentrics. Since last week I have those Puma's.

In the 816's are altec 3156 250W speakers and in the tannoy's are the 300W gold speakers.

Now i'm combining them together. Searching for the best setup.
I've got two active yamaha F1030 crossovers and two yamaha p2200 amps.

About the 816's. It makes sense in what kind of room you put them. A time ago I had them in a Café where there was NO low on the front but in the back of the café and on the rear of the PA there was mutch low. Last year I had them outside and that was great. Great dance-able sound. I think its just were you put them in the envoirment.

Before the 3156 speakers in the 816's I had 421-8LF speakers in them. That sounds great to but with 150 watt it was not enough for disco use and sometimes A little band. The 3156 can handle mutch more power.
