    SM1's at Westlake

    Hi all

    Update...

I am back in LA to pick up my HR7's and head back to Cabo. I have spent the last 3 weeks running around western Canada and then driving from northern Alberta to LA. Ran into several nasty snow storms coming through Montana and Idaho....a bit late in the year for that!

I have purchased 2 Deqx units and ordered the required Digital Output module needed to do dual Deqx's properly. Larry Owens from Deqx was kind enough to make sure it was delivered to Westlake for me.

Westlake has recieved several orders for the SM1 over the last couple of months. They have several in production as I write this. Unfortunately I got here a day to late to hear a pair getting their final tweaks in the sound room. Another pair will be in there next week.

These have to be seen in the flesh to appreciate the size.

Here is a photo of me standing beside the ones that just came out of the sound room.

We load the HR7's tomorrow and I will be on my way.

PS: Glenn was kind enough to invite me to his home last night for a meal and a good listening session. He has a pair of BBSM 10's in his living room and BBSM 6's in another room. We really enjoyed Leonard Cohen's new Live in London DVD.

    Astonishing Demonstration on PE Distortion

Glenn is really onto something with his PE Distortion Theory's. For those of you not familiar with his white paper.....you can download it from Westlakeaudio.com

In a nutshell, he has very strong opinions about the interaction of the audio signal combined with its immediate (inside the Chassis, Cabinet) and our living environment from an electro mechanical point of view.

He has shown me some pretty awsome examples of just how destructive PE distortion can be in the audio chain. In a couple of demonstrations the differences are simply amazing. In my opinion, he is definately onto something.

I'll tell you this much, he put on 3 different cd's last night and played the first 2 minutes of a track. He then removed the cd/dvd from the player, left the room and came back 2 minutes later and played the same track again. The difference in the recordings was not imagined or "should I hear a difference" influenced.....they were real. Yes, even the video quality. When I learned what he had done it helped me have a deeper understanding of his theories and the validity of them.

No. I can't tell you what he did.....but it sure made sense after finding out.

Interesting to see TAD ET-703 being used instead of JBL's 2403. I remember talking about that with Ken C. last summer... I guess the deal for 100 units of 2403 didn't work out...

The TAD drivers are an upgrade to the standard JBL. This particular pair are on the way to Russia.

Here are a couple of more pics.

    I wish I had

I wish I had taken a photo of the bases for the SM-1. Its made out of a block of Walnut an weighs 100+ lbs.

    Gorgeous to say the least.

PS: Glenn and his wife are coming down to Cabo next month as our guests. I am looking forward to some great listening sessions. He has turned me on to some great cd's over the last 2 visits to LA. One being Al Jerreau's "Accentuate The Positive"
