    Altec A700 and Altec amps

I got a new offer for some Altec equipment, this time among other things it's a pair of A700 and A700XLF subs, 9442, 9444 and 9946 amps and PS90 and 95 monitors.

Is the A700 system any good and what about Altec amps? Are they comparable to i.e. Crown?

Anyway... I ended up buying the whole package, so I filled up the car with aprox 1100lbs of Altec and just got home from a 12 hour drive

Poor picture of the A700 and A700XLF (unfortunately one 3154 woofer have been replaced with something else):

As far as I can see, the A700 is very much the same as A7/MR994, the same woofer, horn and driver but another design of the box.

I'll check the ports on the A700XLF later when I unpack them, they are still in the car.

This is what I got in the car:
    3xA700 (with 1 extra MR994/909-8A)
2xA700XLF (unfortunately one woofer is not 3154, seems like JBL)
    2xPS95 monitor 15" coax
    1xPS90 monitor 12" coax
    3x9444 amps
    1x9442 amp
    1x9446 amp
    2x1632 XO
    Vestax 2x31 EQ

The biggest problem is that I need to rearange some rooms in the house and tear down a wall among other things, but hopefully it will be worth in

Sorry abouth the late answer, I totally forgot, but they seem to be 5" wide and 4" deep I guess the box is very much the same as A10 only with a slightly other design

I've bearly tried them yet since my hometheater will not be finished until the fall. My present room is not suited for this setup at all so I've just tested a pair of A700 to get an idea. First impression is good but VERY differnet from my 250s, and as a fullrange speaker I would definitely keep the 250s. So I could not have settled with A700 without subwoofers, the lack of bass in the lower parts are not my taste But since I in fact will be useing subwoofers that doesn't mean anything!

First impression except of the lack of lower tones is quite good even though I'm not comfortable with the XO yet, so maybe it's way of how it should be

Today I've also ordered recone for my pair of JBL 2245H, and I think I will be useing those instead of the 3154s. I guess some people will not like this, but probably I will also modify and use the XLF cabinets for the 2245H since there's no real value of the cabinet and it suites the rest

I`ve done some more testing of the A700 tonight, without subwoofer it really lacks bass, but when I also connected my 3182/8182 wow did it sound great! I`m running a 9442 on the horns and a 9444 on the woofers, crossover is 1632a and crossover freq is 630 hz, the sub is feed by a Crown Studio Reference.

I guess my room doesn`t do the A700 justice but I have to say that the bassutput is nowhere near what I thought it would be. Do you A700/A7 owners use these speakers in full range or do you use subwoofer?

i use subwoofers with A7 cabinets when listening to modern dance music...

with jazz/blues/roots music, i feel the subs are less necessary....
