    Smile 2426 vs 2425

    Hi,

recently, I bought a pair of 2426 drivers for use in a 2-way hifi system.
I am very pleased with them, great dynamics & higs.

But, can anyone tell me the difference between 2425 and 2426? What changed?
Somebody got a good crossover scheme for these?

Then about the 2416 driver. I have a pair of these in UREi 809 monitors.
Is this the same as 2426? (minus the cover, etc)
By the way, great speakers, those little UREI's...

2425 = three hole mounting of horns
2426 = screw on horn w/ three hole adapter.

I believe you will find that the 2416 = 2426 without the cast can and back cover.

I believe you will find the diaphragms are all the same, basically.

There are PLENTY of crossovers available for these drivers. They are very popular and used all over the world in real boxes and systems.

I use the 2225 and 2425/2370 combo. Simple.

Do a search for 2425 and you will find volumes of info here.

2425 tend to be a bit older as the 2426 was a replacement and differ only as said above. The diaphragms are identical.

The 2416 has a different diaphragm and is a more Hi Fi oriented driver :dont-know. It will not handle the power that the others will.

I love the combination as well but there is a lot of bad press about the 2370, for what reasons I am not sure.

I have three 2426/2344combos and two 2426/2346 (Everest horns) in my 7.1 HT/audio set up. I really like them.
The 2370 is considered a nice horn for Pro Sound but many people don't like them for home use. They are too directional for close up listening. :dont-know

On another thread a couple of people were talking about how compression drivers are inherently harsh sounding... horns like this one exacerbate the problem.

Used properly and using the correct horn a compression driver can maintain all of it's pluses and not sound hard, harsh, glaring, or shouty.

For example, the 1" exit drivers discussed in this thread are often used far below their comfort range. If you use a larger horn and cross it over higher you will reduce or eliminate the unpleasant "horn" qualities that many dislike.

That said, there are plenty of Klipsch fans out there and they don't seem to mind an aggressive sounding speaker. Perhaps the Vintage JBL, Altec, and Klipsch fans merely put up with the unpleasantness since they focus on the dynamics and effortless playback of a high efficiency system. I don't know, but I can tell you I have heard a number of horn systems that you would never know were horn based if you couldn't see them... the Array 1400 is one of them.

D: "What happened to the 'horn sound'?"

G: "Oh we got rid of that a long time ago."

I don't believe everything that I read. The 2425/2370's that I have were the first JBL's that I ever purchased, 1983 I think.

The 2425 is drilled and tapped for both three bolt horns and two bolt horns. That can be handy depending on what horns your using.

I have a mix of 2425 and 2426 drivers in my systems, no problems using them together.

    early dayz

the 2 hole mounts for the 2425 have to be found by cutting away the cork gasket...

The very *first* generation 2425's had a straight nose and were painted gray = and the whole driver was assembled with allen bolts.

And the "S" version ( 2425HS ) was used in the first gen JBL / urei monitors and early theater stuff.

Later JBL renamed it the 2426 and used a removable "snout" - and also produced a 2" exit version called the 2427

Many people thought the "S" meant special but my contact at JBL called the 2450 version as used in the DMS monitor ( 2450SL ) as the "snoutless" driver and that is what shows up in the service manuals...

    no kidding...
