I just picked up a pair of L96s, hoping they would resemble my 110s. What a match!!! Have you ever heard them?? The woofer excursion is scary, but I swear it has that gorgeous deep bass that is well, just the way I love it. 110 nut to another, honestly.

I've been looking for a pair of L110's or L96's for quite some time. I'm hoping to find some that are in need of repair for cheap. How does the newer L96 tweeter compare to the L110 tweeter? Also, how do they compare to the L65's?

Yes, InfinityQ2, I have heard the L96s. In fact I have a pair that I run in parallel with a pair of L110As. I can switch between the two pairs or listen to all four of them. I have difficulty hearing any significant difference between the two different models. It just might be my hearing. It ain't what it used to be back when, not that it was that good back when.
If I had bought a pair of L96s back in '82 I probably would have been an L96 nut now.

I have a pair of L110s that have mediocre cabinets, which could be easily be re-veneered. The components aren't exactly in the greatest shape, LE111A woofers are refoamed on the wrong side of the cone, LE5-10 midranges have dented dust caps with repaired cones and 033 tweeters that look pretty good. They sound just fine to me. The shipping would be the killer. I have another pair that are in their original boxes and I'd say their are probably an 8.

I haven't heard a pair L65s since the 70's. So I can't do any comparison there. The 033 and 044 tweeters are very similar. They both have phenolic domes with 044 having a deposited layer of aluminum.

The L96's obviously seem to be a revised version of the L110. I never owned them at the same time but sometimes I think the L96 was voiced to be a little brighter and more forward than the L110. Of course this could be an error in memory on my part since I never compared them directly. I also thought the cabinet on the L110 was nicer than the cabinet on the L96. It was a little fancier with the raised baffle and I think the finish was nicer on the L110. The L65 is not quite as refined as the L96 or L110 but very good also when set up and adjusted properly.

about 2 weeks ago I picked up a pair of near mint L110's at GW for 19.95 - no foam of course - I refoamed them a week ago and this morning I finally hooked them up - OMG - I've got them hooked to an Adcom 5500 thru a meridian DAC and preamp from a mac mini - I had them on crappy stands and they sounded good, but then I put them on the floor, slightly tilted back and WOW - the soundstage is about 6 feet high and very wide (about 2+ feet out past the speakers) clear, good bass, transparent, smooth ,smooth....

Mike, I think your memory is pretty good. After doing some comparison listening yesterday, I would have to say that it's pretty much right on. The L96 brightness is very subtle as is the pronounced forwardness. There is a difference between the two. I think overall the L110 is smoother sounding.

Maybe I made a down grade when I ended up with the L96s. I had two pairs of L110's and both were either rough or had been damaged in shipment. At the same time I had a pair of 120Ti's and remember thinking that the 120Ti's were very good but the L110's just seemed more enjoyable overall. If you have a pair of L110's in nice shape consider yourself lucky. For some reason they are tough to find.

Like I've mentioned numerous times before... the L96, L112 and L150A all used a modified version of the 6 dB/octave / 12 dB/octave hybrid 4313B network. The L110, L110A, L150, L212 and L250 all used 6 dB/octave filter topology (I think the L166 was in there too but can't remember for sure and don't feel like looking it up right now).

The 4313B-type systems had more presence, the 6 dB/octave systems were smoother sounding. It's a preference thing. I actually had a custom pair of mirror imaged L96's with switchable N110A/3113B networks (using the bi-amp switch out of the 4333/4343).
