Which would be better as a subwoofer amplifier? Reliability, quality, etc?

I have been using an XTi 2000 for the past two years or so as a PA amplifier and I have used it bridged for a bass guitar system. The XTi is a level above the XLS models, but I doubt most users have any use for all the bells and whistles (digital signal processing) built into these models. From my experience, it would make a dandy subwoofer amp, assuming you could put it in a separate room. The fans on all of these pro amps will drive you bonkers in a home setting.

The XTi-1000 does not sound very good when bridged. It looses the impression of total bass controll that you get in Stereo mode.


I have not auditioned the XLS.

I have a few XLS amps. Theses are solid performers but the fans are loud as hell.

I just might go with the XTI 1000 in stereo then. 275 watts per channel seems sufficient for what I'm doing. Don't plan on killing my hearing entirely. Maybe around 80-90 dB, and maybe the ability to go to 100 dB. Listening distance would be 10 to 14 feet at most.

The XLS seems decent, but I'm reading of quality control issues with them. From what I gathered, the XTI line is made in the United States, so hopefully quality will be on a better scale.

For home use I would avoid amps with fans, there is a boatload of good amps without fans. The beauty of those new Crowns is when you need to load them up at the end of the job, and put them away.

This why cinemas keep all-noisy amplifiers located in the booth isolated away from the auditorium.

They’d be better off located in different room with cables going though the wall from AVR/AVP that is in the listening room. Pass the speaker lead though the hole into the room and to the loudspeakers! Hence you won’t hear a bloody damn thing with all-those nosiy fans at all.

And it doesn’t matter if there whisper soft quiet fans. You keep adding the same amp the SPL dB will double up on all-the-amps then it will sound like one amp with one fan running at normal speed or what ever! Point is you don’t want to hear them! Only the recoded soundtrack, now then!
