    Question Winding depth of 2231H

This Question goes out to the recone experts of the forum.

Yesterday I reconed two 2231H. When taking out the old cones I found that the voice coil former is made from paper. OK I guess this was state of the art at these times.
BUT what really made me wondering was the winding depth. It is 16mm and not the 19mm from the 2235 kit that I had expected.
    Any comments to this?

    Grrrrrr..... Giskard

I thought the 2231H is very close to the 2235H and then the winding depth is so much different?
Is this a real 2231 or does somebody "combined" this cone assembly?

    Hi all!

Guido,if you look closely to the THIELE-SMALL parameters of 2231H and 2235H drivers(See http://www.jblpro.com/pub/technote/thiele.pdf)you'll see that Xmas are quite differents from one driver to the other.5.08mm for the 2231H and 8.38mm for 2235H driver. This is not due only of the difference between the power capacity of the 2 drivers(100W and 150W) but also due to the difference between voice coil winding depth(16 to 19mm) and to the effective moving mass(to 155g)

As they have the same basket, the same magnetic gap depth and the same flux density(1.2 Tesla),you can say that when you recone a 2231H you made it a new 2235H.

As GISKARD says, these drivers are very close. But very close are not the same!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most of us on the forum have way too much of this stuff for our wives to put up with. Hell a single pair of 4333s would put off most spouses, but your parts archive is certainly over the top.

    Guido,
It sounds as if your 2231s had the correct cone/coils. You've now "upgraded" these frames with slighty beefier cones and coils...which run 3mm deeper. They will sound the same, but with a touch more power capacity and maybe a touch more low end. Most people like the 2235 kits in these 2231 drivers.

I have confirmed that the 2231 has a 16mm winding depth.
