    Passive X-over improvements

    Hi all,

Has anybody made modifications to the L150 and L150A crossovers? I am in the process of charge coupling my complete system and was wondering about the sonic improvements that anyone may have made. TA.

    Allan.

    Allan.
I am trying to learn about crossovers and I am making some progress. Design for the crossovers has a lot of variables and tradeoffs to consider.

After reading about all the issues I am seriously considering triamping and using an electronic crossover, which offers an order of magnitude improvement.

The only thing in a crossover where you stand to make gains is with quality inductors. Cap and resistor quality really don't matter as long as it isn't an electrolytic! However, inductors are a problem and the heavier gauge wire used, the better.

Crossovers for my 3-way design cost almost $200 each cabinet and that is using modest quality parts.

Your best bang for the buck may be biamping or triamping and eliminating passive crossovers altogether. Passive crossovers have many evil attributes like phase delay and distortion.
