Fender often had JBLs as an option in many of their systems. Isn't that what the "F" in D130F, etc., stood for?

    Indeed!

Leo fender most certainly DID offer JBL D130,s with the F designation in his amps. The driver with the F designation was modified by JBL to Fender specification. The D130F can sustain more abuse than a normal D130, and I believe they changed something with the surround to facilitate the D130F,s abuse handling characteristics.

According to information online about the F series of JBL MI drivers, they opened up the gap slightly for more tolerance and slightly higher power handling. They say they used viscous damping fluid, called goop, to coat the surround. The D130 power handling was rated at 25 watts, while the D130F was rated to handle 35-60 watts.

Yes the "F" stands for Fender. I have a set of D120F that my dad bought for his Fender amp back in 1967.

Harvey Gerst, who is an occasional poster here, actually designed many of those "F-series" drivers for JBL back in the early '60s. With any luck, he'll pop in sometime soon. Anything you wanna know about them, he's the man...

    Regards,
    Gordon.

Sorry for the delay. I had a big birthday bash this week (turned 67). The original speakers that Fender bought from JBL were our standard hi-fi speakers. What you saw were probably D131 speakers, which were a 12" version of the D130.

    Fender D120F Signature speaker

I`m picking up a strange bass cabinet soon, buildt to match the 4612B cabaret speakers I got from the same guy. He got two of these and they did look very similar in constuction to the 4612īs. I only had time for a quick peek. Would these drivers work at all as bass cabinets? He says one of them is reconed professionally but the other is a completely original Fender D120F Signature speaker.
