    Questions about the 4430

    Hi all,

Just found this forum .. looks like a lot of great information.

I have a pair of 4430s that I got in the early 90s. I used to have a recording studio and these were my 'big' monitors. At some point, one of the 2235H drivers was fried (we did a lot of Rap music back in the day). While waiting for it to be repaired, I bought a 136a driver from the shop to pop in as a temp replacement.

Fast forward 15+ years. I now want to use these speakers again in a home studio setting. The 2235H needs to be re-foamed. The 136a is in excellent shape (it was re-foamed by the shop when I bought it). The other 2235H is nowhere to be found.

My question is ... at the moderate to low volumes that I will now be using these speakers, is it worth trying to find a matching 2235H? I know it was a special driver in that it could stretch up to 2K. What was the top end limit of the 136a?

After a quick look around, it appears the 136a is becoming quite rare and valuable. Is the best plan to sell it and use the funds to pick up another 2235H?

These monitors won't be used for critical listening .. just for "checking the mix" on a big system.

Also, I see that there are many different re-foaming kits available on the internet. Is there any one that is better than the others? Any vendor that is preferred?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

"sell it and use the funds to pick up another 2235H"

...that's what I'd do. Fewer questions in my mind that way.

Try a search here on "Rick Cobb" regarding re-surrounding materials.

    Cheers.

2235H is easy to buy. If you want I can check the prise.

If I understand you right, you still have the basket for the 2235H? even easier to get a re.cone set.

I'd get a pair of 2225H or 2235H cores... a single if you still have one and have them properly reconed with new JBL kits. Then your speakers will likely be as good as new. Sure it'll cost and extra $200 bucks, but you'll know what you have and be good to go for another 10-15 years.

Thanks for the help guys. I have ordered the re-foam kit from Rick Cobb for the 2235H.

I will be offering up the 136a for sale and pick up another 2235H for the other 4430 cabinet.

What is a fair price for a 136a with original cone and pro re-foam?

What is the going price for a 2235H?

    Thanks

    2235 price? I wouldn't -expect- any -more- than the price of a core + a professional/
authorized/trained-expert recone job with JBL parts... but weirder things have happened.

136A? No idea... which way is the wind blowing today?
