    L8400 subwoofer question

    Greetings all.
Just curious if anyone has any experience and opinions about the L8400 subs listed by Harmanaudio on e-pay.

On one hand, I really don’t need the extra bass beyond the L100t3’s, but I am putting together the DTS/DD system that needs a sub. I realize that MSRP is supposedly $1099, but as usual that does not mean much. I have a PB12 with no amp (doesn’t everyone…) that I picked up for $5 that I was going to put in an amp, but after seeing mixed reviews from parts express on the BASH amps, I have now been thinking about just starting over with a whole new unit. I listen to 90% 2 channel and 10% HT, so most of the time the sub will not be in use. Anyway, thanks for your opinions.

IMHO of the new subs out there, for the money, you can't beat it! Very puchy, accurate and musical. So many others I have listened to are just "one note wonders." I guess time will tell on the durability of the amps that plague many a powered sub. So far so good for mine!

They typically sell at around $300 at auction, which is an excellent value.

The main thing about the 8400p is that it is tight and flat in all the audible octaves. No unpleasant peaks in response or heavy booming crap to deal with, and you can crank it as high as you want without losing the accuracy and flat response. It also will perform well in a variety of placements. A seriously under-rated sub. Sub performance is not only about what it can do below audible levels, unless you have it crossed over at 40Hz. It's just as much about what it can do between 40 and 100Hz, and that's where the 8400 really stands out.

Depending on your amp and bass management setup, you should consider using an 8400 even for stereo music below 80Hz, it will relieve your L100s from working so hard and free up a load of amp power.
