I'll be able to more accurately figure this one out once the box software arrives, but just generally speaking what performance differences would I find between the two enclosure types? Application is home hi-fi crossing over up top to a large EV horn/compression driver..

Just quickly looking at the specs an E145 in the optimal box, ported will give 70Hz, closed 100hz. The 2245 closed will give around 52Hz and open will give 35Hz. Both of these drivers should be run in a ported box to make good use of their performance.

I think awesome is too small a word.
I have some larger EV horns (9040A) mated with Altec 291-16k that I would like to try for mids. If necessary, I have 2404 up top..
I run my 145's ported in 4.8 cu.ft. boxes tuned from 38-57Hz depending on the subs tuning and sub high cut slope I'm using. I run the 145 without low cut and alter the box tuning to match the subs slope. I didn't want to cluter up my mains.

Well actually it is a hi-fi application. I have these drivers available and have always wanted to try the E-145 for home use. I know with the larger horns and compression drivers it seems more suited for PA, but if hi-fi goals could be met I would like to try it...
By the way, I had originally thought that I could do a 4345 clone but alas only have 2123H on hand...
I think your two woofers can be a world class bottom end... I fear the upper range will be out classed by them.
If you were going for a crankin PA, then I would have said change out the 2245s to 2242s and you're there.

I use E145's with 2123's, have LE-14 subs under the E-145's . Might want to try an E145-2123 combo and see what you think. It works for me.

Thanks..Actually some of your posts inspired me to use the E-145's I have here. Do you cross to the 2123's at around 300hz? Are they sealed? What HF driver do you use?
I think your Altec drivers are probably quite serviceable if mounted on the right horn... but which horn? The answer is a rather subjective one, but I'd look seriously at the 1.4" wooden radial horns out there or better yet a 1.4" tractrix salad bowl style horn... in both cases, I'd get one with a 300Hz cut off so that you can cross over from the 145 at 500Hz... next, I'd look for a better tweeter. There are many here who are happy with the baby butt cheek. I am not one of them. If I was going to use a vintage JBL it would be the slot tweeter, otherwise there are newer tweeters from JBL and there are tweeters from shhhh, other manufacturers.
Going with the 2123 in between the 145 and the horn seems like a bit much, do you really want three narrow band woofers per side? Then again, taking that compression driver down to 500Hz does require a sizable horn.

I use the 2123 from 300hz up to 1.5K. They are sealed so they are used in the same range as a 2122 in a 4344. I use a 2435 with a PT waveguide above the 2123 no UHF driver.
You can certainly skip the 2123 if you have a good sounding horn. It depends on a couple of things one being how high up you want to run the E-145's. I use a 801c coax driver in my Urei 811c clone. The 801c is an E-145 with a 2425 mounted through the pole piece. They cross over to the compression driver 800-900hz and it is a nice sounding combo. Based on that you could certainly bring the E-145's up to say 800hz in you wanted to.
Try things out and see what you like. Post some pictures too.
