    Searching for best Midbass

    Hello everybody

I´m searching for a new JBL Midbass for my system. It is a 4 way system (2235 x 2, as a cornersub, 4,5 cft enclosure). Mid / high is a D.A.S M 401 / 2385 a + slots. Now I#m searching for a 12" Midbass in the region between 63 - 500 Hz. I'd like to build a closed cabinet, but maybe that wouldn't work down to 63 Hz. Has anybody ideas for the driver / cabinet???? Thanks for all answers.

    Greetings Aktivkampi

    2206 is a good mid-bass canidiate

I suppose the 2206 would be considered an excellent mid-bass candidate.

My next system build will include a 2245 18" a 2425 1" compression driver and I am also needing to acquire a mid-bass to fill out the package. Right now, I beleive the 2206 will fill that bill.

I've used this driver in a few other systems and it is hard to beat. ...very accurate, reasonably efficient, tuff as nails and relativily inexpensive at around 150 USD per in the used market.

According to 4313B, GT's answer in this range is the JBL 1200FE, if you can find them.

I've heard the TAD 1102 work very well in that range, if you can find them. Very powerful Alnico motor, 41 gram cone. So fine! Could be crossed over somewhat higher than 500 Hz. They would need to be ported in about 1.4 cu fit. The 1101, ferrite, would probably be near as good.

In about 4 cu ft sealed Pi speakers recommends the TAD 1602, if you can find them. I think the JBL 2215/LE15A is also worth investigating for that application. Classic, big motor Alnico, underhung voice coil sound. The Altec 515b would also be in this category. I don't know about using it in a sealed enclosure, but the JBL 2234, an overhung, ferrite motor woofer would also be effective in this range.

    Ported, JBL 2204, 252G, or 2217H.

The 2204 is not that common on the used market, but it can be reconed in the 2202, 2203, 2204, 2206 family of frames. It has a copper voice coil rather than aluminum. The 2202 could get down to about 70 Hz ported, but I'm guessing you're using the BX63A crossover.

The 252G is the woofer in the LSR32. It is rated as 3 dB down at 63 Hz in that enclosure; if you match that enclosure you could run with no HP filtering on your upper three elements. It plays up to 250 in that system, so I haven't heard it up to 500. This is a modern driver, similar in some respects to the 1400nd--two voice coils plus a braking coil, high-intensity neodymium magnet, high-tech cone. It gives very tight, low-distortion bass.

The 2217H would give you the ultimate slam, I think. 14" frame, very powerful motor, 90 gram cone. This would be the modern version of Drew Daniels's classic answer for 80-300, the 2220/2227, but super low distortion, big ferrite motor.

The 2234H, 252G and the 2217H are currently on the JBL pro transducer list.

Even if you find them, the TAD drivers mentioned are a risk because they are all discontinued and TAD does not support discontinued drivers (the way JBL does).

Since he wants to get down to ~60Hz, I don't think the 2202H is a good candidate. The 2206 or 1200FE would both be better... I would even consider the K145/E145 since the top end only needs to get to 500Hz.

An E145 does a great job only use mine to 300Hz but it can go pretty high with that light cone and still sound good.

At the time I posted this on recollection without checking; it's wrong. They actually recommend a vented box of that volume tuned to 37-38 Hz.

    Hi Richard Long

The D.A.S M 401 is no JBL product, D.A.S is a spanish manufacture, who started copying JBL products I think in the early 70's. The M 401 has the same size and weight as a 2440 and uses also an alnico motor. The original diaphragm is also build from aluminium and features no diamond pattern. I'm using this driver for about ten years and checked it out with an 2440 from a friend of me. I (we) couldn't hear any difference..... D.A.S is very hard to find in Germany, specially the older parts. I've seen the auction on ebay and I must say, if you are the one who gets it for that price, you could be very lucky !!!!!

    greetings Aktivkampi
