What is the difference: JBL XPL-200 / XPL-200A

Does anyone know if there is a difference between the JBL XPL-200 and the JBL XPL-200A?

Was there an update in 200A, if so, what is different? I believe they were only release for about 3 years, between 1989 and 1992.

I have been told that the earlier models came with aluminum voice coil drivers compared to the later models that came with copper voice coil lower efficiency units. What years carried which drivers, if this is the case?

Are the copper voice coils still available?

Could these speakers have been release in different countries, being exactly the same, except one set of coutries sold them as XPL-200 and other countries sold them as XPL-200A?

    Look forward to your reply!!

    Cheers

I only know of the XPL200A. It was available from 1990 through 1992.

"I have been told that the earlier models came with aluminum voice coil drivers compared to the later models that came with copper voice coil lower efficiency units."

I never heard that one before.

"Are the copper voice coils still available?"

    Yes.

"Could these speakers have been release in different countries, being exactly the same, except one set of coutries sold them as XPL-200 and other countries sold them as XPL-200A?"

Very possible. No mention of XPL200 anywhere on Harman America's website. Only the XPL200A is listed.

    Giskard,

I am looking at buying a pair of JBL XPL-200 speakers here in Australia but at the back of the speakers where the binding posts are, it says "JBL XPL-200" not XPL-200A that is in the JBL brochures for the XPL-200's.

Before buying these speakers I wanted to find out answers to these questions just in case there may have been different models available through its production life.

So, toy yor knowledge the XPL-200's only came out with aluminium voice coils originally?

What parts for the XPL-200's are currently avialable to purchase as parts?

Thanks for your valued information and help.

    Cheers

I was just having a look at the original JBL brochures, and the pictures show the back plate as being XPL-200, not XPL-200A as originally thought.'

    Now this is more confusing!

    Any updates appreciated.

Re: What is the difference: JBL XPL-200 / XPL-200A

Well one learns something new everyday!

The XPL200 used the 095Ti midrange transducer which did have aluminum wire. Also the UHF had a 0 dB and +2 dB switch.

The XPL200A used the 093Ti midrange transducer which had copper clad aluminum wire. The UHF had a -2 dB and 0 dB switch.

CCA wire is easier to work with. The net result isn't too significant.

Both transducers are still available and in stock.

    Giskard,

Is there any significant sonic differences/advantages/disdvantages between the 095Ti and the 093Ti midrange transducers using the different wiring?

    Thanks and cheers

Sonically some people might find the XPL200A sounds slightly better than the XPL200 but without a direct A/B I doubt anyone could tell the difference. From a manufacturing standpoint the CCA is easier to work with and will hold up longer.
