    Thoughts on 2420 in Le175

I have a set of LE175's in jbl Apollo cabinets from about 1967. One of them plays weak and reads a low on the ohms, around 3 from what I recall, the other was around 7. The are marked 8 ohm but have the red dot instead of green, so I figure they are 16. The le175 calls for a D16R2410. I have a NOS D16R2420 diaphragm that I have tried with some improvement but am not happy with it. I've swapped the horns between cabinets to rule out cross overs and other issues. Any thougths?

    WOW there is a difference

There is a difference!!. I found a NOS JBL d16r2410, the diaphragm that is supposed to go in the LE175. The horn came alive. What a difference. Now I'm thrilled with my $40.00 garage sale find. They were in pretty good shape, but now are wonderful. Cabinets and fret work were in good shape. A little light sanding, some tawny brown teak stain and a little danish urethane (not poly), new surrounds on the 14's and one new diaphram.

Too many underestimate the LE175 within its range. I've considered trading mine for LE85s on my HL91s a couple times, but when A/B-ing them, always preferred my LE175s. (I'm not saying that they are all the same though.) To me, they sound smoother, especially in the lower range. Zilch has illustrated this graphically, so I'm not crazy.

(This assumes that you cross them over to a tweeter.)
