On the Slab, In the Lab, May Just Be, Worth a Stab

In lieu of finding an H92 for my center channel, I'm thinking outside of the box.

I have a 1217 and an H91. The 1217 flares to 5-1/4". The exit on the H91 is ~4". Hmmmm, that portion of the 1217 beyond 4" diameter could be grafted onto an H91 for a longer horn that should be capable of reaching lower frequencies.

Can anyone measure the distance between the 5-1/4" end of the 1217 (at the flare inside the perf plates) and that point at which it necks down to 4" and report this depth? (If this distance is too short, it wouldn't be worth the excercize or messing up a good 1217.) I don't think the H87 is the same as my 1217 is 1" longer than my H87s were. (It's same length as an H91)

Can the change in curvature at this point and resultant dispersion/interaction be modeled somehow?

    Thanks

I think David McBeans Horn Responce program will model it, I have only used it for LF horns but I don't believe it is size / frequency limited.

If you don't already have it, just type HORNRESP into your favorite search engine. If it directs you to BigPond, your there.

    Hello Toddalin,

If you have to have a H92 there is the one listed at Jammin Jersey for $100:

or perhaps one of our members here has one "in stock"

OUCH! (I just paid $107 for a pair.)

Thanks for the tip, I may have to take them up on it as it really seems to be the only game in town. (They used to be $63 NEW with the lens.)

I'm looking at pics and thinking that the on 1217 almost all of that additional flare between 4" and 5-1/4" is in the last <1" or so, so except for the area of the plates, cutting it at 4" ID won't add enough to the H91 to be appreciable or ruining the 1217 for.

Toddalin, you could always show them the receipt for the $107 pair and suggest something...you never know.
