    BBE Sonic Maximizer

Has anyone had any experience with BBE Sonic Maximizers...pros/cons?

Where would you place it in the signal chain?

I've used them in live PA and sometimes in recording/mixdown (I have a BBE Unimax 401). I also use one on my bass guitar (BBE Stinger).

No experience with using one in a home systems, although I suppose a DJ might use one. It would go between preamp and power amp, or in an EQ loop if input/output levels could be matched. Dunno if they made a home version. What model are you looking at?

I tried it briefly around 1986 when BBE was the latest thing to have.

There were two versions, the pro and semi pro, and pro had the processing control, and threshold, and bass trim pots as well.

You can use it either in an effects/tape loop or at your preamps outputs, I liked it better in the loop.

It is supposed to correct phase anomolies in your recordings, and make your music clearer, cleaner, and alive.

That said, the BBE lasted 1 week wiht me, I found it a bit synthetic sounding and on the bright side too.

Give it an audition see what you think.

I think it was a 462...and it WAS in a sound reinforcement system.

I don't know anyone using one at home...sometimes these things
clutter the sound rather than improve it.

    Thanks all!

I find myself reaching for it most when working on an old multi-track recording, and I'm looking for a somewhat dull-sounding vocal or instrument to pop out of the mix when needed.

Lately it's been used on the horn subgroup for a live band playing outdoors, and the horn mics they use sound kind of dull with the windscreens on.

Check input & output specs, might not be a good match for your home hi-fi gear.

i saw block diagram, its a dynamic eq, with multiple envelope (amplitude) followers tuned to seperate frequencies, these control the eq section afterwards.

Check here. You'll see a dislike for them.
