    JBL/Altec project

    Hello
I want to build a custom JBL/Altec system and need some advice. I’m a regular visitor to the Lansing Heritage forum, and really appreciate what you are doing here.

I currently have Altec 604e’s in my listening room, and now it’s time for something else. First I wanted to build a set of JBL Hartsfield speakers, but after a good look at the drawing and all the parts I let go the idea. I do have the 2390 horn/lens combination and a set of JBL 2440 drivers. And for UHF the JBL 077. I was wanted to use a the JBL 2235 for LF, but I have not found a set yet. My uncle gave me a pair JBL k130 musical instrument speakers, and for the future I was planning to recone them to 2235(I’m not sure if this is possible). I also have a pair Altec 416-8b speakers witch I was planning to use for LF.

    So this is what I have : 2x JBL 2440, 2x JBL 077 and 2x Altec 416-8b

The 604’s are housed in a 612c cabinet and for testing and experimenting I want to keep using the cabinets. I don’t now if this cabinet is ideal for the Altec 416 or the JBL 2235, but later I’m building new cabinets when the loudspeaker and crossover configuration is final.
Any suggestion what crossover I should use ?

    Thanks Dirk

    Mix

Well, You can throw these togeather and hope for the best. You wont know how they will turn out until you do it, I suppose. The right x-0vers and the proper sized boxes will be key, I guess.

I've mixed some JBL/Altec components over the years before with good results.

I just bought some Altec 614-8b on E-bay that I plan to re-cone. I plan to use them as surrounds. I've never heard these. Can you tell me about yours?

    Hi Dirk,
You have the perfect combination (416, 2440 077) for a Onken-system. The 612c is to small for the 416 though. Just add a 500Hz midrangehorn to the 2440. Check this simple spreadsheet
http://www.revintage.se/Onken.xls to get the right size for the 416.

I have read Zilch’s “keeper’’ project and have seen him using the JBL 2450 and 2405 with the crossover, but will it work for the JBL 2440 and 077? And what to do with the Altec 416; just use the LF part of the N801??

A: My father is using them in a Altec M19 setup, and they sound pretty good.

416-8B will work in conventional reflex enclosures.

It's in the box modeling data bases.

Last time I looked, M19 box was too big for them, actually.

Oldest large-format driver I tried on "Keeper" was 2446J as I recall, and it worked fine.
