    Question Help with 1401nd

I want to build two reflex enclosures, each containing a pair of JBL 1401nd woofers. These are the 14 inch units used in the DMS-1 monitor. The problem is, I can't seem to get the net volume and port size for the cabinet. JBL doesn't have the Thiele-Small parameters for this driver either, so I can't use a box program (I could only get parameters for the 1400nd, which I'm not sure is the same unit). Can anyone point me to a source of information? I will really appreciate it.

    1401nd Surround

Thanks for the reply, Niklas. The surrounds are foam. These woofers were used in the DMS-1 monitor.

    Aha
i have the 1400nd in my K2 system also.
I guess these are the same, perhaps there
is other ohm than in the K2

"perhaps there is other ohm than in the K2"

Maybe the difference is visual. Both transducers take the C8R1400ND recone kit.

    1401nd

You are correct, both take the same re-cone kit. I just don't know for sure whether of not the Thiele-Small parameters are the same or not. I don't want to take the chance of spending money and time on cabinets if they may not be right. There could be differences in the magnetic structure. Any idea why they would give this driver a different designation?

    1400 reasons to question JBL...

I read somewhere that the 1401 was offered in matched pairs and had the gold terminals..?? I know that the 475 and 2450 had different magnet geometries ( internal vs external return path ) but I believe the 14's were the same.

I have (4) NOS 1400Nd's that came from the leftover DMS-1 inventory but I don't see any "matching" info written on them.

It's probably the same as the 2440-375 issue....same driver, different paint ( of course black goes faster and has a sweeter high end response when aligned north-south and you use a tube amp with the speaker wires wrapped around a hot water bottle )

    1401Nd

I looked carefully at one of my drivers, and it doesn't have anything on it except a small sticker "96Y-JBI". It is painted flat pebble finish black (like their horns). There are no gold plated connectors (just the usual spring clips). The box says "316935-001" which is the part number. This number appears on JBL's exploded veiw of the DMS-1, and the driver is listed as a "1401Nd". If your units came from the DMS-1, I guess they should be the same thing. What makes you say that your drivers are 1400Nd? The oddest thing is that JBL tech support has absolutely no information on the 1401Nd, just the 1400Nd.

    1400-1401

    Hmmmmmmmmmm....

I guess another look into the storage area is in order.

Mine are NOT black - more like a battleship gray / metallic finish and they DO have the gold terminals.

    I will check tomorrow AM.

Well it seems that mine are 1400Nd's and are gray w/ gold terminals.

Betcha even money that the 1401Nd is the identical item with a little cheaper finish ( aka the "PL" designation that's common inside factory boxes ) to save that all-important 40 cents per unit...

I have purchased MANY jbl itmes that show up on the "B" stock list - sometimes the identical item is 20% less than the published price! Of course you might not get the fancy rubber tire on the magnet...

And BTW - it's TRUE north as long as you live on prince edward island, canada...

And some trivia: If you were standing AT magnetic north, eh, and held a compass in your hand, which way would north point?

Yep, mine sure look different. The frame is the same, but the color is flat black. The cone and surround look the same too. As I said, the terminals are the spring clip variety. Maybe they just changed the cosmetics for the DMS-1, but I'd sure like to know if they cahnged anything else. How would you go about building a reflex enclosure for a driver you didn't have specs on? Is there anyone who can measure these things?
