    Upgrading choices (longish)

It's been a while since I've posted to this forum as a combination of work and my new amplifiers has taken up my time but I'm seeking advice on which which of the options below will give me the best results.

I have recently bought a stripped down pair of 4502 cabinets complete with components in wonderful condition: 2440 2311 LX5 N700 O75 and non JBL bass drivers (found these via Lancing Product Marketplace incorrectly sold as 4325's and the only cost £180 / $350).
    http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/s...ad.php?t=20556

I now have a number of choices as to what to do:

    1) Improve my L200's which have cabinets in absolutely mint condition with the 2440/2311's, a spare pair of 2225's which have 2235 cones, O75 or O77 and build a charge coupled 4333 type crossover but with a 500Hz bass mid xover point. I could then use the 2420's and horns together with a spare pair of 2215's to rebuild the 4502's into 3 way S7's. These would then match the 4505 cabinet I have. ( there is currently a French ebay auction where there is a pair of L200's modded to this spec). http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWA:IT&ih=020

    2) Drop the 2440/2311 straight into my 4333's and put the 2420/H93 into the 4502's, but I'm not shure if the long horn will fit. I do have one spare 2307 though so I may be able to get another and use short horns.

    3) Rebuild the 4502's as original (S8 system), filling the dings on the cabinets, re-spraying in grey and using my spare 2215's. This route is the easiest but would still leave the L200's original but with all their inherent faults.

No specific advice... the success of changes are so subjective.

I would sell the LX5 and N7000. You can do much better with newer designs, especially the charge coupled variety.

I would not crossover the 2311 horn below 1200Hz, I have no personal experience working with this horn, but JBL recommends a 1200Hz crossover point, and they are typically optimistic about how far you can push a horn.

Sounds like you have several fun options to try.

    decisions decisions

The only good use for the 2311 is *above* a 10" low mid and you have none (yet). This will also require another set of cabinets that you don't have (yet)... That horn is NOT good to 500 under any use.

The S8 system is very lacking in the crossover region - I have a pair of beatup sovereigns that have that system and they are eclipsed by the modded L200 / L300 with the much longer horn.

You mention H93 with 2420?? something is a typo there.

If you want to "improve" the L200's, bump out the back ( I just did it to my pair ) and use the 2312 horn. It makes a sonic difference in the crossover region. Add the 4333 networks and you're good to go.

I agree - dump the LX5 and N7000 and use the proceeds for building CC networks.

Long horns will fit in 4502s last time we looked. You have to mount the driver with the horn installed, as I recall.

I would not be doing S7 or S8, rather, installing 2235H equivalents in the 4502s, turn them upside-down for experimentation, and try some newer drivers and horns, two-way.

My second pair of L200s are getting 2452H-SL/4381, and my 4505s I'm working on fitting H4338 or H9800 in, drivers yet to be determined.

    [That's my "thing," tho.... ]

If they are dimensionally the same as the 4505, yes. It worked for me.
