    Strauß: Sphärenklänge

    Sphärenklänge
    Neue Philharmonie Westfalen
    Heiko Mathias Förster (Conductor)
    (c) ebs records GmbH
    (p) 2007

You get a new years concert with many well known titles by the Strauß-family (Carmen-Quadrille, Kaiserwaltzer, Radetzki-Marsch ...).
It is a very well performed recording - and there is no applause at all. Another highlight is the surround sound - there is no hint on the cover.

    Richard Strauss: Hero's Life OP.40

    Richard Strauss:
Four Last Songs / Hero's Life
    Odense Symphony Orchestra (Denmark)
    Jan Wagner Conductor
Live recording from Odense Koncerthus, 29-31 March 1999

Musically it is a wonderful recording highly appriciated by the audience (fortunately only at the end).
The recording is outstanding regarding the sonical, technical and surround performance.
It is one of my most „audiophile“ discs.

    DVD Audio 96 kHz, 24 bit 3/2CH
    DVD Video Dolby digital 3/2CH
linear PCM 48 kHz, 16 bit stereo

Been a fan of Bryan Ferry for many years - couple weeks back I notice a new live concert was available on Amazon - filmed on July 25, 2011 at the ancient Roman amphitheater in Lyon, France. Found a good price for the Bluray version, and it arrived today - It also includes the Making of Olympia video - a 28 min interview/behind the scenes of his previous studio Album that was available only on the CD/DVD Special Edition of that release. Its nice, but irrelevant to this release But on to the Concert Footage. Its a 5 channel DTS release - very nice sound, tho I didn't see a dedicated bass/sub channel to it, but it plays well on all 5 surround speakers in my system ... No sign of the Roxy Music performers, its Colin Goode on Piano, Neil Hubbard on Guitar, Andy Newmark Drums (and Tara Ferry also on drums!), and a number of newer folks. Tempo is up a bit, but there's a lot of music done well live - lots to like of you like the man and his music!

I have not heard but I have been told that the Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon 30th anniversary sacd has a multichannel cut on it that is something special. I prefer the Orignal LP by far but from what I hear it is worth a listen.

We had a great discussion through the various multichannel mixes of DSOTM in this thread:

    http://www.audioheritage.org/vbullet...OTM-Pink-Floyd

For the specifics of the different mixes, check out Hoerninger's POST #1 in that thread ...
he has links to all the official discussions of these discs:

Bruce Botnick re-did the Doors albums with 5:1 DVD-As. Excellent!

Bob Dylan's "Blonde On Blonde" on 5:1 SACD, cool. One can Mute all the channels except the center channel so you'll only hear Dylan (trying) singing.

Miles Davis- "Sketches Of Spain" & "Kind of Blue". Yes, please.

Handels' "Messiah" on Harmonia Mundi with 5:1 SACD- phenomenal recording!

    The Getz/ Gilberto SACD.

The Stones London Records catalog on SACD.

The Beatles released their catalog with the remastered versions, which both the stereo and mono box sets are very good. They never released them in SACD/ DVD-A but you you can find some of the songs on the DVD box set "Anthologies". Those are in 5:1.

The David Bowie "Live" is a good 5:1 DVD-A.

Avoid the Band's "Music From Big Pink" DVD-A. Robbie Robertson tried real hard but the songs seem to loose their "glue" from the original.

Blood Sweat and Tears, Child is Father To The Man is available now from Audio Fidelity. It's fantastic. Great use of the surround channels and you won't wish for more bass. The sound quality is so good that it's hard to believe this was made in 1968. There are no hit songs here though. Audio Fidelity discs tend to go out of print pretty quickly, so get a copy now, while the cost is still reasonable.

    Barenboim: Beethoven: Symphonies 1-9

You can still get a wonderful set of Beethoven's symphonies conducted by Daniel Barenboim with the Berliner Staatskapelle for a reasonable price. Surround sound as DVD-Audio and DVD-Video (Dolby) and a stereo track.

    Bass management isn't that easy.
(Question: What to do with a three channel SACD without LFE? )

Sea Change is now available in Pure Audio format on Bluray disc - at a reasonable price.
Like the SACD, It sounds spectacular!

It sounded spectacular. We actually sat and listened to music without the usual slack-jawed commentary for at least three, maybe four cuts. The high level of mixing and mastering was evident from the first bar.

I found the DVD-A of Sea Change for a bargain price and snapped it up. It includes some videos as well as the surround mixes. Very, very nice--one of the best discs.

It is a bit melancholy at times, since it's a "break up" disc ("you're dead to me..."), but it's magic in your surround system. If an album of this calibre couldn't make surround recordings commercially viable, then SACD and DVD-A didn't have much of a chance.

    Highly recommended.
