Although I must have heard every beat of No.5 elsewhere - you know: ta ta ta taaa - I have never had a disc of my own before. This version is neither too solemn nor too mechanic, just fine.
Why an extra disc for No.7?
It is just superior regarding the music. A Must-have I'd say.

    Both SACDs are hybrid multichannel.

Thanks to your recommend, I just received a copy of the Shangri-La SACD album from your post ... wow, what sonics! The Oppo works great decoding it, but I'm not sure my cheap Yamaha has the channels right - Mark's vocals seem to be left rear on that CD ... but I'm not too eager to pull the wood rack, spin it and check cables yet again ...

    Black and White encore

In a previous posting I have introduced Roy Orbisons "Black & White Night".
The music is available as SACD as well (combined with the DVD).
The SACD has one more track which I have not known before ("Blue Angel"?).
The track is not mentioned anywhere - ENCORE .

    Rosenstolz Herz

Rosenstolz is a well appreciated German duo for Lieder, pop and rock.
On this CD they are less melancholic but more rocking - the "neue deutsche Welle" rom the eighties is shining through.

    BAP sonx

AP is a well known German rock band. They are singing in "Kölsch", a dialect around Köln (Colognn) which can hardly be understood elsewere.
I was out to buy a SACD by them, "SONX". But ... the price has gone up too high. I'll stick to an older LP.

    Jimmy Witherspoon / BIG BLUES

The singer Jimmy Witherspoon seems to be never mentioned in this forum, but he deserves it.
The booklet starts "When Jimmy Witherspoon sings his unique brand of jazz soaked blues, caressing each lyric like a long lost lover ...":
He is accompannied by alto sax, tenor sax, organ, piano, guitar and drums.

The recording is technically very clean, the instruments are well placed within the room.
The room building seeems to be a (good) artificial studio work.

Recorded at the Point Studio, London, June 1981

    Momentary one of my favs.

    poor man's AVALON

Thank you, Heather, for having pointed to Bryan Ferry.
I was looking for AVALON by Roxy Music on SACD (multichannel hybrid). Music media are no investments for me.
I bought instead AVALON on CD remastered.

    Name: Avalon.jpg

Intristingly there is an amazing gentle surround effect effect when switching to DOLBY PLII without disturbing the sound balance.

The sound quality of this CD as a whole is not as good as Bryan Ferry "Boys and Girls" on SACD. I'm wondering whether it is due to mediocre studio work or is it due to the 14 bits (2 lost) when a HDCD is played on a non HDCD player.
    Anybody knows?

    AVALON give away

I orderewd an AVALON CD without HDCD and not remastered:

    1. The cover picture is slightly smaller.
    2. The colours are not so intense.
    3. The music is not so loud.
    4. The music does not sound so compressed, an "s" is more natural and clean.
    5. When listening in Dolby PLII I do not miss the SACD multichannel.
(compared to the HDCD version in a normal 16bit player.)

Who wants a dispensable AVALON HDCD for free?
PM me if you have at least 300 postings in this forum.
    The winner will be announced.

I've managed to grab a number of SACDs over the last 3 months ... some for the quite reasonable price between $10-15 (plus shipping, of course)
3 from the RCA Living Stereo series, some Eric Kunzel symphony, and some Pop stuff

There are not many titles under SACD that appeals to me. I saw one Sony DVD player with SACD capability going for £40.00 (buy now) but it’s the titles that concern me. There is little classical music SACD and hardly any film scores to choose from on ebay.

Is the format currently still active or has it gone under with only what’s left to buy from?

Well only one title I’ve found on page 8 Titanic the audio description is pretty vague. “Multi” Multi what Multi 2 channel or 6channel?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Titanic-SACD-S...#ht_500wt_1076

I have the dts CD which is dts6channel and sounds good enough, then again the SACD might have an edge? But is it SACD6channel I don’t need another 2channel CD of the same title.

Star Trek: Nemesis (SACD) by Jerry Goldsmith
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Star-Trek-Neme...#ht_483wt_1099

Looking at the label it looks like its only stereo 2channel or does it also come with SACD6channel? Its bit hard to see.

    Amadeus

WTF! This is overpriced just to listen to music at US $8,750.00 £5,471.83 yeah like that will sale like hotcakes!
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ESOTERIC-UX-1-...#ht_998wt_1059

After looking though 16 pages and only a few titles that made say WOW out loud I get the impression this is dead format, just like dtsCD are dead now for buying.

I hardly buy standard CD with 2channel unless the price is cheap.

Just looked for some dtsCD and only 1 page is listed. I only have a few dtsCD and I’m pretty pissed off with dtsCD giving up a few years back with only a few hundred titles, not even close to what LP or compact disc, is now.

Actually, just over half of all SACD releases are classical.

While it is true that the format hasn't been popularly adopted, there are still new titles being released. So, yes, it is still active.

What do you mean when you say "Multi 2 channel"? What would that even be? SACD supports 5.1 multichannel playback; not all titles include full 5.1 mixes, though I believe the vast majority do.

You'll note that in vertically oriented text on the side of the disc cover it says "SACD Surround". I think it's safe to assume it's not stereo only.

Yeah I noticed that but I have also noticed in the past some CD labelled Dolby Surround

The label for Titanic says 5.1 channel

So the format is still kicking then. It’s hardly got any good titles to get me, jumping at it. More film scores and I might take the plunge.

    The STAR TREK Nemesis score might be SACD stereo matrix surround? They have to label it more clearly is it 2.0 / 2.1 / 3.0 / 3.1 / 4.0 / 4.1 / 5.0 / 5.1?

I have DVD audio disc Holst The Planets that is only 4.1 front left right stereo surrounds and LFE.1 no centre mix!

Look along the top right of the picture just below the Dolby digital logo the text says 5.11004. 5.1 meaning its 6channel when in fact its only 5channel. It also states this on the label below "5.1 Dolby digital AC-3". Its still a good listen I was playing it earlier this morning.

Some dtsCD tracks only have front left/right with stereo surrounds and LFE.1 it depends on the engineering mixer and the artist what they want? Some could even come as 2channel without even warning the customer, you’re better off with 2channel CD than paying four times the amount.

Like I said in my post - I have bought a number of SACDs for between $10 and 15.
Sure, there are some out of print/collectables that sell for more - so, I don't buy those!

The RCA Living Stereo is well documented as 3 microphone (actual 3 channel) recordings from the 50s -
they do have some tape hiss but the music is excellent. Do a search to read the other thread on the Lansing list
about RCA Living Stereo for more info on them ... they are famous.

SACD takes special players to decode - My two OPPO DVD players did it, my Harman Kardon did not,
but the HK does HDCD, as do the two OPPO players. Of course the OPPOs do DVD/DVD-A and all of that medium.
