Roy Orbison Black & White Night
DVD with DTS 5.1 Digital Surround

The surround sound tears off a curtain and you can hear a wonderful voice and great musicians.
A very good work of those who did the studio job. (sound engineer?)

One of the Best Live CD's Ever
This CD came from the 1988 Live HBO Special that was one of the best musical performances to come along in quite awhile. Roy is joined with many musical greats in both vocal & instrumental talents. This CD is the highlight of Roy Orbison's career. If you own this CD, then you must buy the DVD. To see the performance live is a very special treat.

    Santana Lotus

    http://members.cox.net/surround/quaddisc/quadcds.htm :
Santana - Lotus. Columbia C2K-46764, SO encoded, double CD.

    {This one is absolutely AWESOME. This one was recorded live in Concert in Japan, nothing fantastic in the rear channels....just a real YOU ARE THERE quad mix filling the room, and the audience all around you. For those of us that got hooked on quad thanks to Santana, this release provides a great counterpoint to what they did in quad. This is a tough quad to find on vinyl as it was only released in Japan as a quad. I was astounded when I found that the American CD was obviously made from the SO masters! ...}
It works. I have ordered the 2 cd version and played with DOLBY PL II - much more pleasing.

    York Ambisonic

For international readers this link is preferable:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambisonics

AMBISONICS is a British invention by Michael Gerzon in the early seventies. It has been developed at the University of York, there is a good page as entry point:
    http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/mustech/3...o/welcome.html

AMBISONICS is still under interest although the patent has ended. It uses at least one four channel microphon and can be decoded to as many channels as desired. Possible solutions are stereo format (UHJ-format) and 5.1 format (G-format):
    http://www.radio.uqam.ca/ambisonic/b_g.html

AMBISONICS can be bought on CD, look for "York Ambisonic" at AMAZON.

NIMBUS has offered some AMBISONIC discs:
    http://www.stereophile.com/news/120604ambisonic/

Just picked up the DVD-A of Love by The Beatles . The mastering is well done, though I'm not sure yet how I feel about the whole concept behind the album. I need a few more listens before I form a qualified opinion.

Thanks for the link to the original thread; it was a good read.

I'm slowly coming around to some of this newfangled stuff. I think I was the last person I know to actually build a surround sound system, and I still rarely do any "critical listening" on it, but some albums have proven to be quite a treat.

I know what you mean, I have multichannel versions of "Tommy" and
"To Our Children's Children's Children" and think something got lost when they did them - the mixes are all wrong compared to my old vinyl pizzas!

I wondered if they even started with the same master tapes!

Yet the SACD of E Power Biggs doing the Toccatas on 4 organs is quite impressive

    Live at Leeds

Ever heard The Who "Live at Leeds" from an ordinary CD switched to Dolby surround?
I suspect it is a matrix quadro recording, the guitars a better to distinguish. Anyway the two extra speakers in the rear deliver sound.
Don't tell this record of the Who delivers only little bass - use a sub! They are the Who!

    Hindustani Ragas

My son came across from Glasgow for some days and presented me an easter egg:

Hindustani Ragas from NIMBUS Records, Monmouth, UK produced by Wyastone Estate Limited:
    http://www.wyastone.co.uk/nrl/dvd/9008a.html
More than three hours ragas recorded in Ambisonics (4ch surround or stereo) on a double sided DVD.
I have never heard the tabla's drumheads and the sitas strings come over so vibrating as with these recordings.
It is not due to close miking but due to the good merging of sound and room with the Ambisonic recording technique.

I bought the DVD-A of Love and after listening to it on the surround system I played the CDs of the original albums and was very surprised to hear a much better sound from the CDs. Every other album that I have that's been made into a DVD-A sounds much better than the original except for this one. I am of the opinion that George Martin can't do anything worth shit without John Lennon sitting beside him and I am totally disappointed with the effort.

There exists a LP release as Quadro SQ version: Columbia PCQ-31610 (SQ) or CBS Q-65299 (SQ).
I have the stereo version CBS S-65299.
When playing the latter with Dolby there is a amayzing surround sound. Presumably there is no difference between the quadro and stereo version?

I definitely prefer this approximate Quadro against the stereo playback.

Caravanserai is rereleased as CD version and as remastered CD version.
There is a (in the meantime) high priced SACD version, which is announced as stereo.
It is open to conjecture how these versions will behave.

    Any comments?

I have the SACD version. It cost an arm and a leg, but this has always been one of my favorites. It sounds best using Logic 7 processing and 7.1 surround. It still sound like the 70s, but this is 70s sound at its best.

    Bach: Christmas Oratorio

    J.S.Bach: "Christmas Oratorio" BWV248
    by The Netherlands Bach Society,
    Museum Catharijneconvent
    produced December 2002
    Multichannel SACD, hybrid

IMHO a very lively recording with clear voices and a homogenious choir.
It is worth to read the reviews on Amazon.com.

It seems to be pricey but you get two CDs, a 2/3 inch thick booklet, all within a dark wine red box - nicely made.
