Great Organs in Paris /France:
1.
Church: St. Sulpice, Paris
Organist: Michael Murray
Music: Marcel Dupré, César Franck, Charles-Marie Widow
Label: Telarc, 2002
Mainly symphonic music composed for organ.
Fo me it is too loud over long passages, some may like it.
2.
Church: Notre-Dame, Paris
Organist: Olivier Latry
Music: Transcritions from Bach, Mozart, Wagner, Berlioz, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev
Label: Deutsche Grammophon "Midnight at Notre-Dame", 2004
Very different and some well known pieces of music. For me the last piece "Bach: Chaconne from Partita BWV 1004" is most impressive, as loud and fully registered parts change with very gentle parts in a very musical way. This recording obviously shows the necessity to record in the night without urban noise.

I am curious:
I do not know whether my Pioneer DV-575 is playing the DVD "Bee Gees, One Night Only" in Dolby 5.1 or DTS. Or is it the same??
(Btw. nice concert .)
When I play "Sting, ... Nothing Like The Sun" the player and receiver are displaying DTS.
When I play "The Everly Brothers, Reunion Concert" the player and receiver both are displaying DOLBY D(igital).
All indications are correct.
But when I play the mentioned Bee Gees the indication is permanently Dolby D(igital). The DVD is capable of this. But the the case has a big header"dts DIGITAL SURROUND SOUND".
The disk itself has a print "Dolby digital" and "dts".
I am using the optical input all the time.
Is there a misconception or do I miss the right switch?

On all the discs I have that do Dolby & DTS, there is a setup option where you choose which playback mode before you start playing the disc. Is it defaulting to Dolby in spite of attempts to choose DTS? There is also a DTS mode that comes through the multi-channel outputs.
I've been collecting DVDs and playing them through a high-end 7.1 HT system for about a year.
For the most part, multi-channel recordings are a pure dissapointment. Some exceptions apply, however.
A recent David Gilmore (Pink Floyd) live recording is a notable exception, I suppose.
I hate dealing with the movies. Some are 5.1, 7.1, DTS, Dolby, Stereo only and my receiver (Onkyo 7.1 135WPC) plays each very differently so unles you have it set up for the correct recording, the sound is poor. It took me weeks of reading the receiver manual to allow me to operate even the simplest of functions.
Thank you! Now is running DTS.
Setup option before you start - that's it.
[As my interest is the sound only most of times I started without a screen and missed this option. ]
Acknowledged. I made a low budget entry for getting experience.
OT but related :
I wonder how I can apply these cable stands (china or best in gold although very expensive for the moment ... ) in back of my receiver to get all of these cables properly cleared up???

A forumite recommended "Das Mikrofon Vol.II" by TACET. This CD gives comparable recordings of condensor and ribbon mics with omni-directional, cardioid and figure-of-eight characteristic, dated 1947 until today.
Additionally the first half of an hour is a wonderful jazz concert by some proponents of the current German jazz scene, the Georg Rox Quartett.

Mass in E Minor
Conductor: Marcus Creed (GB)
Choir: Vocal ensemble of Südwestdeutscher Rundfunk, Stuttgart
Recorded March 2007, Hybrid SACD

(available via Amazon, no affil.)
One of the most beautiful presentation of this Mass I have ever heard.
(Except the one our music teacher coached (?) with us many years ago, today I appreciate his effort much more. The sopran by the school girls was marvellous. It is more than a memory - there is a recording .)

IMHO a very delightful recording, not bombastic.
Although not mentioned in the ad by Amazon it is a 5 channel surround sound recording. In the additinal channels there is music for sure, not only room information, although you might think there is no surround sound at a first glance.

The current reference quality surround disc is TrondheimSolostene Divertimenti:
http://www.amazon.com/Divertimenti-H...6270671&sr=8-1
Released by the 2L company, who has a very good list of audiophile discs. This is a 2-disc set with a 5.1 SACD and a BlueRay disc. On the BD disc you will find the following audio streams:
LPCM 5.1 at 24/192
Dolby THD 5.1 at 24/192
DTS-MA 5.1 at 24/192
LPCM 2.0 at 24/192.
A couple other highly recommended surround discs:
Bach: the Four Great Toccatas and Fugues by E Power Biggs
http://www.amazon.com/Bach-Four-Grea...6270967&sr=1-1
A 70's era quad recording remastered for SACD 5.1 that is simply awesome for LF/LFE demos and surround mix.
Al Jarreau: "all I got"
http://www.amazon.com/All-I-Got-Al-J...6271486&sr=1-2
5.1 SACD, hard to find. This has a terrific surround mix, and features true full-range audio in all 4 corners.
On SA-CD.net there is a thread called
Thread: List of the Original QUAD Recordings - SACD Wishlist? .
It starts with a l_o_o_o_n_g list of four channel recordings released as SQ, QS, CD4, Q4 and Q8 linked from
Quadraphonic Discography
SQ and QS are matrix encoded and can be played back with a modern multichannel receiver switched to DOLBY. It is not exactly what has been intended in the studio but it often gives a reasonable sound stage. You will not necessarily need the original LP as it might be that the matrixed four channel information is still present in a rereleased CD, as these quadro releases have been stereo compatible.
I have one SQ-LP and it works.
In the WWW there are discussions about it.

In a chunk of borrowed LPs I found in near mint condition :
SANTANA Caravanserai
There exists a LP release as Quadro SQ version: Columbia PCQ-31610 (SQ) or CBS Q-65299 (SQ).
I have the stereo version CBS S-65299.
When playing the latter with Dolby there is a amayzing surround sound. Presumably there is no difference between the quadro and stereo version?
I definitely prefer this approximate Quadro against the stereo playback.
Caravanserai is rereleased as CD version and as remastered CD version.
There is a (in the meantime) high priced SACD version, which is announced as stereo.
It is open to conjecture how these versions will behave.
Any comments?
