    Amp for 4311's

    Hi there...first post :-)

Just wondering if an amp I am borrowing would be suited to my 4311's ??(which I haven't used yet)

Its is quite a good quality PA type of amp thats rated at 750w per side into 4 ohms.

Would that be overkill for the 4311's ??
Could I damage the 4311's with that amp ?
What wattage @ 8 ohms would be best ??

    Cheers

Kinda sounds like overkill to me - JBLs are generally pretty efficient.
See - http://www.jblpro.com/pub/obsolete/4311.pdfThat brochure claims the "Power Capacity" is 75 watts, so you could run it with a 150-250 watt amp to provide headroom for peaks, but you could cook it with an amp of 10x that power.

How about some more info on the AMP:
    - what brand?
What is the rated output in stereo into 8 ohms?

"Good quality" doesn't tell us much. IMHO, a quality amp won't harm your speakers no matter what the rated output. In theory, in a home listening environment, your ears will stop you long before the amp will fry your speakers. Of course amplification of a distorted source or front-end problem (high-frequency oscillation) can and will, and therefor all bets are off. In the case of the 4311's, good clean power is more important than providing ten-times what is really necessary. I'd say a Crown D150A-II would work better in your application than almost any 750-watt "good" PA amp I can think of.

Remember; if it sounds bad, turn it down!

    Hi there,

Sorry... didn't get the amp till yesterday !

Its an Australian Monitor 1K2 and I've set it up with the 4311's on a fairly low volume.

I still haven't found a spec for the amp but I was told it was 750w per side into 4 ohms which would make it around 400w per side into 8 ??

I have since bought a smaller amp which is to tide me over until i can find a Crown(they are very hard to get in Australia). It is a Phonic which is rated at 150w per side into 8 ohms.

Just need the tweeter foam surrounds and i will be set !

    Thanx for your help.

    Cheers

    Hi there,

    BMWCCA...I hear ya !

    Unfortunately, real life steps in.....

One Genelec 1031a's amp has gone....The Australian Monitor is the only amp I could borrow...and the next client arrives in 2 hours. No choice ;-)

    Cheers

I've recently purchased an Odyssey Audio - Stratos amp
    http://www.odysseyaudio.com/stratos.html

    It's 150 watts a channel into 8 ohms.
Class A for the first 35 watts...then it shifts to A/B is my understanding.
I'm going to buy more. The fidelity/quality versus price performance is darn good. Lots of reviews by reputable mags. Klaus Bunge, who is the sales rep for this gear here in the states is a great guy. I don't know if Australia is covered but he tells me he's sold these amps to 48 countries.
