How do I change out Altec Push Pins to Banana Adapters?

    Hello everyone!

I have a pair of Altec 846U speakers and need some technical help.

How do I go about changing out the push pin adapters so I can use speaker cable with a banana plug?

I want a direct connection - I already have adapters to put the banana into the pin, but I would like to directly put the banana into the speaker terminal.

Any help would be most appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hi Sound ,

may I suggest you remove the entire assembly put it somewhere safe and build a new attenuater+ binding post assembly.

    Don't Ask Me !

    Sound

wait , till the other's on your side of the pond wake up.

They look mint. It would be a shame alter the original for the sake of saving a bit of time and maybe $50 max. I have never seen the inside of an Altec. I imagine its not as difficult as you fear .

I'm pretty sure there is someone here who can help you ( me JBL, so NFG to you for this ) possibly even make them up for you if you dont feel confident .

    Where do I begin?

Anyone else that can help me?

If anyone is in AZ and wants to come over and re-do it to banana plugs, I will pay you $100.00 plus cost of materials.

    Thanks.

    Where do I begin?
... so I can use speaker cable with a banana plug?
Wouldn't it be better to leave the speaker untouched and
    a) cut the banana plug and attache the cable itself

or if it is an expensive cable leave it untouched too and
    b) build an adapter with a female banana conncteor?

I'd rethink the premise that those terminals need replacing...
The crossover assembly appears to be fastened from the inside,
probably glued. Someone with similar vintage 846's should know...
This might drive your decision to modify, entirely (vs. damaging the
    enclosure).

For a direct connection, I personally would just cut off the banana plugs
on the speaker end and poke the wires in... or crimp on gold pins, if
that's more to your liking. This sort of thing:

IF you were thinking of updating/replacing the crossover itself, then I'd
agree with Rich ... keep the original stock, and swap in a complete
    replacement.

Didn't these once belong to LH user "Storm?"

How many 846U can there be in Arizona?

    Why change the box?

Cut off the Banana plugs and try any of these:

    Please keep it simple!!!

I have read ALOT about a certian pair of 846U's!!!!!!!

    Welcome to the Forum!!!

Please search "846U" or "Valencia" in the above tab and you will be INUNDATED with minutia!

    Kindly Submitted,
