Amp for 4301

Finally got a pair of 4301 (so cute!). What reasonably priced amp would be good for driving these for CD playing in my office?

I was thinking of a 30w solid state amp I build from a kit.

Ideas?

Sounds good to me. I use a pair or 4208 with Urei 6211 amps. The amps are 40 watts and they are more than adequate and sound good as well.

Don, in the shop (I need to post some pictures on that part of the forum...) I use an old Pioneer SX-9100 integrated amp on my 4301B's - I think the amp is 65w per channel. It does really, well.

At the office, where after oodles of years I finally tagged into a room with a door , I've been running a pair of the 4301B's with an Onkyo 8190 (85w) integrated amp, but don't need all it's features, so I'm switching over to the Yamaha AX-497 (also 85w).

These are great cabinets with good sensitivity, and great response. The bass, in particular, will surprise you...

I currently have a JBL Creature and the guy in the next office says the bass is too much. I figure when he sees the 4301 and, perhaps a small tube amp with some kind of outboard EQ, he will have a coronary.

Don't loose that Onkyo to fast... you may discover that it sounded better.

Yea, but I think I went through that. They do sound different - very. Totally different sound, with the Yamaha having a (relatively) modestly emphasized high end. It is more clear. The bass response seems "tighter". Channel separation seems better, although this could be an artifact of the increased definition in the high-end.

The Onkyo is circa 1980. It has all sorts of functionality I don't use - two external tape loops, switchable phono preamps, etc. My application is for simplest consumer use; no TV interface.

You certainly run into more consumer gear than I do. So, you're experience is the Yamaha is not preferred...?

How about a nice little 6215 or a Crown D-75?

I can get around "stupid loud" with my 75 on ADS L810's before it clips. This is in my family room basement.

I don't think I've seen a D45. Read about it, yes.

I've noted it before but is seems appropriate again here: Prices for the Crown D-75/A are absurdly high on Ebay. Seldom do they go for less than $170 and those usually aren't very nice. They often fetch $300 or more. Others here suggest it's the price you pay for one-rack-unit-size convenience. If space is not your issue, you can find the D-150A-II or PS-200 for as little as $100. Sometimes even a PS-400 for cheap. I'm listening to my L20Ts hooked to a PS-400 I paid just over $100 for on Ebay; clean and quiet. I'd buy ten more at that price before I'd pay $300 for a D-75. Nice amp but, unless you're carrying it to work everyday, go for its larger brothers. You can never have too much power.

My second system 4301B speakers are powered by a Yamaha mx-2000 130X2 amplifier and they sound sweet. Most of the time the amp is on 1/4 and never gets much over 1/3 volume with not a hint of distortion from the 4301B. Local JBL tech said the pro speakers could easly handle 3x their power rateing.

I have two of the little Carver TFM-6CB amps. They are a 1U rack design and they have adustable input gain (so you can plug them directly into a signal souce and not need a preamp). I've had one for 15 years and the other for 5 - no issues whatsoever and they sound great. They are 65w/channel and the "B" model is bridegable. Can't beat them for $100 on ebay....

If you can locate one of these old SONY Pulse Modulation power supply amps you'll have more than your fair share of incredibly distortion free amplification - and they won't crush your shelf either!
