    Subwoofer advice

This is my first time posting so sorry if I'm in the wrong spot.

I want to add subwoofers (2) to my system which is currently FL, FR Yamaha NS-1000Ms driven by a Bryston 4B-ST and C is a B&W SE CDM something (pre-Nautilus) passively biamped by a Sonograph SA 250. I'm considering putting the NS-1000Ms on top of the two yet-to-be-purchased sub cabinents.

I recently bought a Crown PSA-2 with balanced inputs and had it checked out by a pro audio repair shop. I want to use the PSA-2 to drive non-powered (obviously) subs. The NS-1000Ms go down to 40Hz according to specs. I have several ASC TubeTraps of varying sizes but going as low as a Super 16.

Initially, I plan to drive both subs with one Crown PSA-2 but will pick of a second PSA-2 and bridge both if I don't find the fan noise distracting.

What do you folks recommend for subs?

I've heard some good things about the SVS products.

Would you consider going the DIY route?

    DIY Subwoofer

    Mr. Widget,

Yes, I'd consider DIY. I own and have used soldering irons (replaced the crappy spring-clip terminals on the NS-1000Ms with Cardas binding posts), have a good selection of hand tools and have a decent Volt/Amp meter but I'm not set up for building cabinets.

    I welcome your thoughts though.

I was thinking that a pair of 2235hs in 5 cu ft boxes would be quite nice, JBL sold them as B380s, but you would need to find acceptable cabinets or have them made.

Depending on your budget, you may want to check out Parts Express. They have powered kits although you already have a nice amp, there. They also sell boxes and drivers separately, all you really need is a router and a Jasper jig to cut the holes to build something....Some folks here are using versions of JBL car sub drivers, reporting good results.

How about a pair of JBL Power 1222. They would be a nice 4ohm load for you amplifier.

I'm have 2 drivers lying around myself. Going to make a 50litres cabinet for them when i find the time.

You can fish around cinema suppliers that have used sub bass 18” speakers in good nick, and at reassemble prices. Hope you get brake at finding a good sub bass.

    Thanks for the good suggestions.

Speaking of Parts Express and cabinets lying around, I know they're not JBL but I found a pair of the small Advents sitting on the curb for trash pickup. "I could not leave her there."

The woofer surrounds are shot but Parts Express has a refoaming kit. Someday.
