    L-166 questions

    Bought a pair of L-166's yesterday...if they live up to advance info, they may be keepers. THe HF and MF drivers look like new. The 122a-1's are out for refoaming right now. They have the aquaplas on cone rears. These have the "twist lock" binding posts. Cabinets are about 98 percenters and the grills also.

    They do NOT say "Horizon" anywhere, was this only for the L-166A model ?
    (but there is an "a" after the serial number). Although they are only 3 numbers apart, the parts that I wud call a transformer, but others call an inductor, that sits on the inside bottom, has different colored wiring emerging for the 2 units. The wire is too short and there is a crappy open solder/splice to the wire for the positive LF connection. It almost looks like an afterthought, not even insulated.

    Any model specific tips on refurbishing them ??

    is the "A" after the serial number for ALNICO or is it the "A" model ??

    Perhaps someone could shed some light this time on that naming convention please – and why and when the 'Horizon' got lost in the production process? L65's lost their 'Jubal' too, as well as L300's their 'Summit'..:dont-know

    IF serial numbers are sequential ....mine are much later, ASSUME to be "A" model as they have the transducer in the LF path, twist locks and aquaplas 122a-1's.. Will do A/B comparison to the 4412's for you when I get home from todays safari.

    I'm planning on picking up a set tomorrow the OO claims are 100% cabs and grills. Says they're perfect, just need oiling. We'll see... They need refoamed so I'll get some pics when I get into them.

    The wiring appears to be the same setup. #44725A and #44727A

    The cabs turned out to be 99%, the bottoms are, of course, scratched up, but the rest is really nice. The 122a-1's turned out to be 50/50. One just needs a refoam, the other seems to have suffered a much worse fate. Think that it will just buff out?

    Oh my !!! does that affect sound ? Hope you spotted problem b4 purchase and adjusted price.....they are very nice when going again. Are you going to recone OR just find another 122a-1 ?
