Maybe the simplest explanation I can give for re-master (vs. re-mix) is that going back to the stereo mix and doing the best you can with it (*) is re-mastering, going back to the multi-track and doing the best you can with it is re-mixing. In a "greatest hits" type package, you'd be trying to make the best presentation of each song, but also trying to make the entire package sound cohesive so there's hopefully not glaring differences in quality from the different time periods represented.

In LZ's case, there are multiple stereo mixes for them to go back to, though- Page has been down this road a number of times.

    Hope that helps...

    As I thought !

    Thanks Ti,

the opinions on those links seem to agree with mine TOTAL CRAP !!!! the originals are far better . The 4345's pulled it apart . I think context is everything in this case. The context being as follows: 1975 , in the basement , Black Dog blasting the heck out the woofs, Gas torch , Mom's knives and a toilet roll tube, lots of coughing and red eyes , then back to school to stare out the window. I always did prefer Floyd , Supertramp and Bowie.

Thanks Rich, I was just about to order it.

Will stick with my old remasters (the ones with the crop circles on the cover)

That seems like the proper context alright, good ambiance. Always liked pink Floyd myself, especially in that context.

Well, its got a lot more bottom and fun to it - not Liston's Cosmic Groove ... think James Brown's The J.B.'s & the Horny Horns ...

Its silly and playful and you gotta dance when you hear it! Great stuff for 1975!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothership_Connection

In 2003 the TV network VH1 named Mothership Connection the 55th greatest album of all time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 274 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Joe S. Harrington of Blastitude listed it as #6 in his All-time Top 100 Albums, describing it as "the greatest r'n'b album of all time."[1]

Yes, Grace has mothered many a band through its flights of musical fancy. Ms. Slick also mothered China and many a young man's libido.
