    Help! Preamp questions please..

    Hi all-

My current system has Kef 104/2 powered by a Classe Seventy Amp, Classe 20 Preamp and Meridian 506 CD player. Unfortunately my Preamp just died. I'm told they can fix it and will likely cost less than $500. My questions:
    Should I get it fixed?
    Should I buy something else?
    If so, what?

I really like having remote control, and appreciate the sound and simplicity of my current system. Are there other good used preamp options you might recommend for similar dollars?

I'd love to get another Classe or Meridian piece but am open to educated suggestions.

    Thank you!
    Fletch

Fix it. It's a nice preamp. Your familiar with it. Fix it if you like the sound!

Thank you AudioBeer. I appreciate the response and I definitely like the sound. Its just a chunk of cash to spend on an older unit. Any other thoughts anyone?

    Fix it.

Unless you simply want to play with your system and tweak away, your old Classe unit is an excellent unit and the likelihood of getting anything better for $500 is quite low.

What could go wrong with a pre-amp that would require $500 in repair work???

I have a Melos sha-1 preamp/headamp. Its one hellaciously good amp for the money and never last more than a day or two on agon. You can probably get one for under 700 bucks. No remote though. You would need to get a Melos sha-gold, and those cost more money and are more complicated inside.

just find a local repair man and get it done for less.
i always put op an ad in the local paper or the internet there's tons of people who can do this for you.
often i find guys who like to do it and they charge me the cost of the components. and just a little extra for the effort.
finally i have a pair of 604 8g's....there not easy to find in the netherlands

But it will surely be $500 worth of work in there.

Classe makes excellent sounding gear. And, Classe is expensive today, finding a comparable sounding preamp can be quite costly.

If you like the Classe, fix it, its still more economical than buying something new at todays prices.

Depending on what parts and how many have to be replaced, I could see $500, as high end gear uses expensive parts.

I was planning on sending it to the factory. It needs a new selector switch and mute. I am open to suggestions however...

cant you just check the local paper or telephone book, yellowpages.
i never let the factory repair anything unless there's still waranty on it.
bu holland is very small so its easy to find people nearby.
