    Kugelwellen Horn

The medium and high frequency horns are Kugelwellen - Trichter or Kugelwellen Horns (spherical horns). They differ from tractrix horns. It is a German invention of the famous KLANGFILM laboratories from about 1950.

I remember when the Avantgarde horn subs came out a few years ago. Thirty grand per pair, and of course you'll want to stack two or three pairs to do things right.

As recall the design, each module uses two 12" drivers on a very short (for the frequencies involved) horn flare. A sub like this normally rolls off below about 35Hz., so they goose up the bottom end with EQ (they had some fancy name for it). To me, subs designed this way sound rather boomy and "bass reflexy" despite being called horns. Achieving 20Hz. response with actual horn loading is the way to do it IMO, but this is the path seldom taken.

Steve have you looked at tapped horns for sub's? Like this work: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showt...threadid=97674

I have looked at it with hornresp and you get away with boxes of acceptable size. No time to build yet though.

The big question is - how do they sound?

In very old audio books you read of using the basement, or buying the property next door for a true bass horn.

Johnny, funny you should ask. I have been researching tapped horns lately, and have drawn up a design that I likewise haven't had time to build yet. My first attempt will have a 15Hz. flare and 20' length like my earlier subs. As I see it the main advantage is elimination of a large sealed back chamber. We'll see how it goes.

    Hi Hoerninger,

As you probably know, that picture depicts one of Bill Woods' early horn experiments. Bill (by the car door) ran Speakerfactory, one of his early manufacturing ventures. He went on to become the chief speaker engineer for Yorkville Sound for many years, and now runs The Acoustic Horn Company.

That VW must have heavy duty suspension. Was this an experiment to see if you could push a VW with sound?

I once came across a set of photos of a bass horn system being built - I believe in Italy - in a guy's basement, entirely of bricks. Huge! When finished you would not be able to see that it was there. Wonder if he used any kind of delay system? His listening room was a mess, though, with all sorts of acoustical damping hung all around the room.

That's it! Of all the outrageous setups I've come across on the internet, this one ranks as the most outrageous. It's unbelievable. You have to ask yourself, why? His room doesn't justify it. There certainly are more practical ways to get really loud, very low bass. But I guess just wanting this and being willing to spend the time and money is justification enough. Hopefully, he does something with the room.

I used to have links to all these incredible speaker systems but I lost them when my PC goofed up a couple years ago. I recall another all-horn system located in a huge room in a guys very expensive house. The gigantic bass horn was made of wood but unlike the above, it actually looked very nice. At least to me. I doubt that it had a very high WAF. Got to go searching for it now .....
