    2215A/H cone

I'm forwarding this question for a friend.

He is considering getting his 2215A's reconed. The coner offered to use a C8R2215H cone. This cone is listed by JBL for both the A and H versions of this driver. He hasn't been able to find spec's for the H driver and is concerned that the original cones wheren't identical and that JBL uses the H cones out of necessity.

He would rather not re-cone it at all (and move on to a different driver) if it isn't going to be right.

The C8R2215H would be the 8-ohm cone kit for the LE15 and 2215 frames. There is a 16 ohm kit available also. You need to know which one you want. When JBL went to ferrite magnets the 8-ohm and 16-ohm designations were changed from A and B to H and J respectively. That is, generally; there are some historical inconsistencies. If still in doubt PM member edgewound.

No worries. C8R2215H is the correct recone kit for 2215A. The only difference might be that the original had the white Lansaloy surround that has now turned stiff, brittle and useless.

The new cone kit will have a grey foam surround.

edit: My apologies for misprinting C8R2215H for LE15A. It is in fact C8R2215H for 2215A. T/S parameter chart lists both 2215A & 2215H with DCR(Re) of 5.7 ohms

LE15A(16 ohm) gets reconed with C16R2215B

    More grist for the mill

    Hi

    - One can see from the info below that at one point in time / there were many different "flavours" of voice-coils being used in the le15 / 2215 series of woofers .

    - It would be nice to know the dcr of the most current C8R2215H kit / to see how it fits in with this "old" info .

    - As long as both 2215As are reconed with modern kits / the changes shouldn't be insurmountable .

    - That's likely true enough .
    - I doubt that the ( old ) 2215a & ( new ) 2215H specs are identical ( see below ).

some OFFICIAL 1983 "JBL Service Department" info ; ( I'm assuming the info here was accurate at the time of printing / which was late 1982 )

    LE15 : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 7.6 - 9.2 ohms / "16 OHMS"
    LE15a : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 7.6 - 9.2 ohms / "16 OHMS"
    LE15b : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 3.1 - 3.9 ohms / " 8 OHMS"
    LE15H : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 8.0 - 9.6 ohms / " 8 OHMS" ????

    2215 : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 5.2 - 6.2 ohms / " 8 OHMS"
    2215a : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 5.2 - 6.2 ohms / " 8 OHMS"
    2215b : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 7.6 - 9.2 ohms / "16 OHMS"
    2215H : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 8.0 - 9.6 ohms / " 8 OHMS" ????
    2215J : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 8.0 - 9.6 ohms / " 16 OHMS" ????
    2216 : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 5.1 - 5.9 ohms / " 8 OHMS"

    - What I get from the above ( "dated" ) info is ; I would only recone in pairs using "whatever" is the current recommended JBL cone kit .

    - It appears the recommended "H" kit might be of a somewhat higher impedance when compared to the original voice coil in the 2215a ( at least this conjecture would have been true 25 years ago ) .
    - This might not the be as large a problem ( at first blush ) if the passive crossover includes an 8 ohm Zobel ( effectively forcing an impedance "match" for the preceeding LC elements ) .

    - One will likely need to further attenuate the horn circuit to rebalance to these ( new ) higher impedance recones .

    ALSO : I wouldn't recone just one
    - An "Eighties Era, nos 2215H recone kit" would not matchup too well ( balance ) with an all original 2215a ( there's too great a difference in DCR to ignore that the voice coils have different AC impedances ).

    Hi Earl K,

Looks like your 1983 manual had a typo. 2215H dcr should read 5.2-6.2 ohms. No?

The 2215/2216/LE15,A,B is a confusing mess.

The info I just published ( if accurate ) is definately a confusing mess ( maybe I should delete it ? ) .

    - The LE15B & 2216 should also have ( according to conventional wisdom ) the same voice coil dcr .
    - What I just published above, shows different dcrs / this could also be another typo .

    - I hope my info is just a typo / rather than there being a single voice coil type, labelled as both H & J ( though FWIW ; it looks like the K145 also had this higher impedance voice coil and it was labelled an "8 ohm" woofer ).

Yep , all fubarred , somewhere . ( recone, only in pairs )

Thanks all. I'll forward the info.
Recone would be in pairs. I would imagine at minimum minor tweeks would be in order for the woofer coil and cap. We have access to RTA via a TACT unit now. NICE!!! unit BTW.

    - I just checked an older test sheet called; "TRANSDUCERS (L.F.) TEST SPECIFICATIONS" .
    - I believe it's from around 1976 .
    - This ( handwritten ) sheet predates the ferrite magnet generation .

    - It gives the following dcr(s)' for the group in question .

    LE15b : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 3.1 - 3.9 ohms
    2216 : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 5.1 - 5.9 ohms

    LE15a : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 8.1 - 9.5 ohms
    2215a : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 5.2 - 6.2 ohms
    2215b : v.c. dcr ( min - max ) 8.1 - 9.5 ohms

JBLPRO also lists the 2215h at 5.7 ohms

So on the surface it looks like he's good to go.

    Thanks Earl
