    JBL based custom studio monitors

JBL drivers have been used for years to build big custom monitors for a lot of studios. Westlake is a good example, and their monitors are now selling worldwide. George Augspurger's productions are another great example.

If you know about and have heard such custom studio monitors based on JBL drivers please let us know your impressions in this thread.

Pics, design notes, schemes and other technical data welcome !

Thats how good it sounded. Crystal clear, DYNAMIC as HELL. But sweet, smooth, and crisp, yet explosive when required. Realistic sounding. heck, he had that 2226 going up to around 750 to 800hz, and it was all there, no lack of anything.

I worked at Westlake for a number of years. That was about 15 years ago. I am biased. They are superb. I would put them up against any monitors in the world. Since I worked there, I can also attest to the care and concern for quality control Westlake put in to every system they build.

There was once a cover story in MIX magazine (in the late 1980's) that featured a big recording studio in Denmark that used JBL (2") compression drivers as direct radiating dome midrange (rear covers were removed, then implemented as sourcing sound from rear of diaphragm ).

It looked very intriguing so naturally I had to try it myself: Sounded strange (must have required a lot of tweaking, other engineering on their part ?)
