    511B massacre

    Hi,
Just wanted to show my work i progress. I found the 511Bs with 802 drivers which I had used in a Onken-style system together with JBL 2405 many years ago. Now I wanted to use the horns together with a pair of JBL/Meyer 2441.
To pair these I bought two JBL 2328 at eBay.

And donīt kill me for this, I wanted get rid of the fins for cosmetic reasons:

I calculated that the 2328s should mate with the horns at 35cm.

But.....it showed up that the 2328 mouth and 511Bs had exactly the same dimensions at 34cm so I made the cut there. I also had a friend water-cut a pair of plates:

So right now I am waiting to get the stuff back from the welder to try them out.

Will come back with a report of the sound. Will at first compare them with a pair of Altec 2*5 multicell clones also with 2328 and the same Meyer driver.

    Hi Lars

    Looks Very Nice !

    - Your 2-part approach will allow you to assemble different style of horns ( by changing out the entry adapter ).
    - I think that what you presently have assembled, will be a sort of "quasi-constant directivety" pattern.

    - How did you cut out the fins ?

This is the 511s when I got them back from the welder:

The 511s with Meyer 2441s are now mounted together with 2*414-8As in IKEA Billy used as OBs. Note the mounting of the 414s as they do not touch the baffles, there will a be an airtight foamsealing in the slot. What remains is mounting the 2405s in the outermost sides of the 511s. Later the speakers will be accompanied by a 2*15" or 2*18" concrete basshorn of 1200-1400 liters.

That is an interesting project. It may actually work too.

With the ribs cut out, I'd speculate that damping the horns will be more critical than using them stock.

Do you have access to any MLS or Sine based measurement gear? I'd love to see a 1m plot of that horn.

Off course it will work! But actually we did some initial testing of the idea before building it. And the pieces are good.

About the damping you can see the lightbrown DG-U6,
http://www.swedac-acoustic.com/pages...damp.htm#DG-U6 , in the upper lip of the horn. Its a two-component polyurethane specially made for vibration-damping. The horn will have thick layer on all outside areas.

I will publish measurements when I am ready with the system. I will also come back with separate MLS measurements of the 511. Hope they measure and sound as I hope for (fingers crossed).

At the moment I am working on a passive line-level Linkwitz-Riley LCR-filter. Due to the radical difference in effiency I will bi-amp.

The alnico 2405 will be offset mounted like indicated here:

The Altec 414s will work down to 80Hz from where this concrete/brick horn will work, height is a little above 7 feet in the basement where the system will be placed:

Makes no difference to me, I'm easy to get along with! Getting home what I would build could get expensive though!

Did you happen to notice what makes a Meyer 2441 a Meyer 2441?

Meyer(Sound) used a little silicone on the surround of the 2441 Dias.

I have also heard that Meyer would remove the diaphragm guide pins or enlarge the guide pin holes in the diaphragm so they could fine tune the centering by hand. Meyer now makes their own high frequency drivers.
