    JBL 4428 close inspection

I have a pair of JBL 4428. I am impressed with the sound quality. But I am not 100% impressed with the build quality.
You can see 2 pieces making the horns. The joint is not looking very good and uniform.

I'm certainly seeing the recent contoured throat design there. Compare to 4348:

That's how the two-piece horns are, apparently.

The material (Sonoglas?) may just be difficult to mold.

There's also a gasket between the two parts.

Have I thought about filling it? Yes.

Am I going to actually do it? Unlikely....

    if you file them smooth, are they then custom refined versions;
that could then be sold on Ebay for high dollar?

IE would it make a difference? would this help prevent the sound from reflecting in the horn when it hit the rough spots?

    "Filling," not filing.

Bondo, repaint, never take apart again.

Forget it. That don't happen here.....

You could go with a real man's horn and use Altec 511B's as they don't have that issue!

    Just kiddin' of course.

I'm always up for a good joke. Thanks for the funny.

Yeah... it's been a common theme though.

It wasn't that funny, and these aren't bad sounding horns when properly set up.

I merely chuckled. It wasn't one of those Rolling On The Floor Laughing Out Loud kind of things. I find the construction quality mentioned above mildly irritating.

OK, I'm waiting for the rolling on the floor special then!

Give me a call when you get the chance. Our middle-man has not answered his phone lately. So I have no clue if you both met up with the wood horns or not!
