Being the utility cab , the paint had to come off. The corners were completely battered. At some time in their past the cabs had been sitting in water causing the mitres to open up. I had thought about building new boxes but ,decided to try and keep the cost down in both ££££ and time.
I used a heat gun and scraper to paint removal and 2 part car filler mixed with a little fibreglass resin to give it a little more viscosity. The commercial 2 part would filler I find too soft. Car Body fiiler holds a nice sharp edge.

I removed the baffle lip with a router and filled the edge with West System Epoxy. This glue is designed for boat building .... It does'nt shrink like that crap 2 part would filler.

Primed and undercoated . wet and dry (320 grit) between coats applied with a small gloss roller.

I have never used sheet glue before. It's the same adhesive that is used on edging tape.

cut the veneer 6mm over-size on all 4 sides.
I used a my plane to prepare the sheet for joining. Another way is to clamp the veneer between two pieces of VERY STRAIGHT timber or metal and sand it back to the straight-edge. You might want to get and extra bit of veneer and practice the process if you have'nt done this before.

Tape the sheets together making sure the join it tight and lined up as you would like it .

lay the sheet glue down between the box and the veneer and and iron it on .

Very nice job Rich, you make it look so easy. BTW, great idea about the car filler, that stuff is very tough, I'll keep that in mind! Cant wait to see the cabs with a finish on them, they are going to look great!

Very nice! This is getting me inspired to do up my UREI 813s with veneer. Certainly would give them less of that Darth Vader look they have.

I do appreciate the discussions on alternative ways to deal with placing the veneer.

My complements to you on an outstanding job and I'm sure they will look and sound beautiful when completed. I hope this will be an insperation to others that have cabinets that could be saved. I understand it's neither easy or cheap to do but imagine what it would cost today for speaker cabinets of this quality.

Removing the front baffle lip also took away the rebate . By rebating the new walnut back into the baffle I have restored the strength ( greater glueing surface) I suppose I could have used biscuits, but I'm too bloody lazy.

I will route the profile,but first I want to trim the back edge in solid walnut to protect the veneer edge.
