    Why wouldn't you buy it?

Anything vintage with the Altec name on it is likely to have an audience on a certain auction site

Interesting to read about your flash drive adventures

nothing fun for a while , but yesterday down at Grab-O-Rama , a friend got an interesting item.

    A glossy 12x18 show-bill advertising a coming concert.

1963 - Patsy Cline ... tickets = $2.50. No doubt it was authentic.

$2.50 seems really cheap , but I remember seeing THE DOORS in 1968 for $2.

In fact I remember going grocery shopping with Mom for a family of 5 (and we ate well - 1967) ... she only went twice a month, so it was a lot of bags each time ... Dad was aghast when it came to $40.

Back in the good 'ole days my Dad would order a new Ford convertible for my Mom every three years. In 1962 he placed his order for a 1963 Galaxy 500XL, first Ford I remember with seat belts and this one had bucket seats with the shifter on the console. It was replacing my Mom's 1960 Sunliner. My Dad liked to get the first of the new models so he really didn't have an idea what they would cost when he ordered them and when this one came in around October he was absolutely floored by the cost of the new 1963 model: $4,000.

we were pretty good kids in '67 and instead of getting in trouble , circulated the new car dealers in Santa Barbara .... we'd sit in those rides and dream about someday ......

sat in a new XKE ..... $6500 ... ? nobody would pay that much for a car

oh yeah , Dad bought the house in '64 for $100K , by '69 it was assessed at $600K and even 30 years ago was at $2M.

I ran into that buyer of the playbill , asked him about it. He didn't want to talk. Finally came around to telling me the story. He took it to a dealer, but allowed the dealer to convince him that it was "too good to be true" , so must be a reprint/fake. Came home and checked the web, could find NO evidence that one had ever been reprinted. Reluctantly admitted that he only got $10 for it.

drug home one of these things yesterday

    .
now have to gen up a p/s . the wall wart was missing. hope it works.

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1972621,00.asp

    Pros
Impressive sound quality. Flexible alarm options. Good connectivity options. Attractive design.

    Cons
LCD viewing angle isn't perfect. LCD could be more prominent.

    Bottom Line
This iPod alarm clock combines iPod charging/playback, FM/AM radio, and dual-alarm clock functions while managing to provide exceptional sound quality. It's not cheap, but you get good bang for your buck.

    JBL On Time

    editor rating: excellent

    MSRP
    $249.99

    By Mike Kobrin

Looking very much like something out of the movie Stargate, the JBL On Time ($249.99 list) is one of the most interestingly designed iPod speakers on the market. It combines iPod charging/playback, FM/AM radio, and dual–alarm clock functions while providing exceptional sound quality. The On Time isn't cheap, but you get some pretty good bang for your buck.

I've pretty much replaced all the CD decks around the house with 24/192 DVD players. Their DAC seems to make a difference in CD playback and it sure is cheaper than buying separate DACs for the 3 systems.

After some false starts (Toshiba's aren't built very well and in my experience are not reliable) , I've settled on Panasonic RV-32's. Have amassed enough compatible remotes to last a while.

So found another yesterday in great shape at the "by the pound" store . It weighs 5 pounds , so the charge was $4.

For an inexpensive player, the 32 is very well built , has lots of features (I use one for DVD movies too) and it's hard to beat the CD sound.

    http://www.timefordvd.com/hardware/r...DVD-RV32.shtml

    Specifications: frequency response 4 Hz - 22 kHz (48 kHz sampling) and 4 Hz - 44 kHz (96 kHz sampling) for DVD PCM audio, for CD audio 4 Hz - 20 kHz; signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio 115 dB for CD audio; dynamic range 102 dB for DVD with PCM audio, 98 dB for CD audio; total harmonic distortion (THD) 0.0025% for CD audio;

Audio CD Reproduction. For music reproduction, we tried both the stereo analog connection and the optical digital audio connection to our receiver, and with both types of connections the sound was really good. The sound has good tonal qualities and is well-balanced with deep bass extension. Imaging is good. Overall, I was quite pleased with the audio quality of the DVD-RV32. It serves well as a single-disc CD player.

24-bit/192 kHz audio DAC: an audio digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that samples at 192 kHz for double sampling for improved sound quality.

Smile some times I get lucky

    .
funny thing is..I also got a HP calculator today that will sell for double
the price that this cost me

sounds REALLY good. 24 bit. 3 beams , 16 pounds ..whew .....detail like I've never heard before .

The new chassis is made from a tri-laminate material from Swedish vibration-damping specialists Sontech. It consists of two outer layers of steel and a middle layer of special rubber polymer, and is said to lower the transmission of vibrations, both from outside and those borne internally—always a good idea. Also, as with all the FMJ models, the sturdier front panel adds to the unit's overall structural integrity. In other words, the metal jacket is not just for looks.

The CD23 also one-ups the Alpha 9 in the power-supply transformer department—yes, it has two toroidals instead of one. Using two allowed a redesign of the analog output stage of Arcam's dCS-designed Ring DAC.

About the Ring DAC: This is the same 24-bit-capable DAC (except for the output-stage rework mentioned above) used in the Alpha 9. Algorithmically, it's virtually identical to what you get in dCS's own Elgar, which earned an A+ rating in Stereophile's "Recommended Components" and would set you back a cool $12,000—without a transport. What makes the Ring DAC unique is that it provides something of a middle ground between multi-bit and single-bit converters. It uses a five-bit DAC (thereby having fewer steps in the resistor ladder, and better precision getting the smallest values right), and 64x oversampling (a lower rate than that of 1-bit DACs, which makes it less prone to timing errors and jitter).

nice reviews ...came with owners manual, but need to get a remote , tho it's close enough
to my chair to get by without it.

Wow, that's one heavy and high-fidelity calculator

But anyways.... nice find with the Arcam. They make great stuff.

My latest goodwill find.... was an HP 20" flat panel monitor that couldn't have been more than 2 years old, in pristine shape. The goodwills around here typically look stuff up online and price "valuable" stuff accordingly. So I was fully expecting to see a price over $30 on this thing. But it was lined up on the shelf with all the 15 and 17 inch LCD monitors and it had the same price as them, too -- $15. SNAPPED that puppy up quick and headed to the nearest outlet to the test it. Operational!
Back at home I found that it works great.

    .
I read a lot about the ARCAM last night and played a lot of CD's

This one is from the FMJ series ... yup, Full Metal Jacket. Top of the Line , standard ones are black plastic. Also noticed that there were lots of higher model numbers , this is CD23. They are non-linear , no, the numbers really have no meaning.

In every review that I read the constant comments are about super detail. And airy 3D imaging. And build quality. And quietness of operation. And this is the best of the $2K decks. And crummy remote.

So I ran through some old favorite CD's. Redbook is NOT dead. Running through the Adcom pre & power to the a/d/s towers is a wonderful combination. I kept thinking ...where have those details been hiding before ? Airy & 3D imaging ?

Damn right ! Spot on ! WOW.

Quietness ? yup, like it isn't even there. Best of $2k decks ? dunno ..I don't shop in that range. Crummy remote ? didn't get it , but deck is 3 feet away ..so who cares ?

A definite keeper. Looks like it may bring new life to my CD collection. And it does HDCD , don't know if I even have any of those ?

    .
    .
I put it in my emergency diaper bag and hung it off my bikes rear rack for the ride home. It's so heavy that the handling was affected.

One reviewer noted that most CD players are mostly air when you open them ... the Arcam is completely packed. Custom DAC + it's board and 2 power supplies.

here's one review that I could have written:

The Arcam FMJ-CD23 cd player is probably one of the best hi fi deals on the used market. Build quality is exceptional. There is a plastic cd loading tray, but it's not chincy and doesn't feel like it will break with the slightest pressure. It just doesn't feel cheap. Functionally, the remote is useful for extensive adjustment, but the buttons on the faceplate perform all major functions necessary. The FMJ series adds not only an upgraded "full metal jacket" but it also upgrades the power supply over Arcam's previous top cd player. The increase in resolution and decrease in noise are very noticeable. As far as sound goes, the FMJ 23 has a very full sound with quite an impressive soundstage. The bass is extended and tight, and the mids and highs do what they are supposed to, it just plays true music. It isn't too bright, it isn't too dulled over, it's a great all around performer that just plays music for what it is and nothing more or less. In comparison with Sony's DVP-9000ES dvd/sacd/cd player, the arcam is a lot more musical. Both players go quite in depth to the music, but the Arcam just adds that little twinkle that lets you know it is not a DVD player. Overall, I don't think there is much that can compare with the Arcam for around 1200 on the used market. If you are into a real tube sounding CD player, Cary makes some nice stuff, but if you want the overall athlete, the FMJ cd 23 is a great choice.

    the Arcam came from GW , as did the L-166's, L-26's, L-36's , BGW 250D , AR-90's etc..etc..etc.
the Rotel phono preamp from Salvation Army.

The Walsh F's were CL , as was the Adcom pre & power.

all the above was waaayyyy under 500 ..total.

the Arcam was in a VCR box . and ignored by the other shoppers.
I got some Klipsch headphones too. Drivers are good but headband is broken.

IMHO, SACD/CD combo players in the $3000 range finally start showing worthwhile differences in sound quality between the two formats, without sacrificing normal CD sound.

    Good luck!

While you have invested a fair amount of time in doing so, you've made some crazy good deals...

thrifting is a local past time here. I combine biking with buying electronics & records (for my son & me) and for fun.

I retired in '02 , paid off the houses & cars and have guaranteed income for life, so lots of time to burn.

There are essentially 2 major types of thrifts,,,,,retail and salvage. In the retail ones, inventory & prices are fairly standard.
Salvage is the real treasure hunt. Never know what will turn up and the prices can be "crazy good"

a friend in OZ replied about the Arcam:

    Hi Tom,
The arcams DAcs are very good, good score, have been trying to source one
these from UK for some time, they have a great sound..
