There is a story to these images taken inside the Royal Mews of the Queens carriages.
Prior to leaving I arranged with my sister to contact two close friends Janet and Phillip who work at the Royal Mews and let them know I was coming over. However Janet did not get the message from Phillip that I was coming over so it was a big surprise when I called that I was in London. I went over for dinner on Thursday night. A number of people live and work in the Mews but there is only one Australian.
For several years we provided Janet's Ballet School concerts with JBL sound and we stayed in touch up until Phillip got a job as coachman looking after the Queens carriages about 6 years ago. For anyone who knows anything about the equestrian business Phillip is very well regarded in those circles. A number of people live and work in the Mews but only one Australian family. Janet and Phillip have two daughters, one is studying veterinary science in London.
The insurance premium on the larger carriage is about 1mil pounds apparently. Its fourteen feet high and weigh's 4 tones and is drawn by eight horses. They are on public display. The stables are also located within the Mews.

Andy,
I think you missed my joke!
Dublin sounds like a fun place for an ale.

Rich an I went up to Windsor on Friday and met with Merlin.
The Castle was interesting but let me just say this was experience in itself. There are Englishmen and there Englishman.
Merlin (Michael) is no exception.
Better looking than Richard Geer (a definite likeness) our Merlin is in a class of his own. Black Porsche and a very serious player in the Tad and JBL business. I don't think Merlin buys off reviews, he flys over to places like Japan hear what the fuss is about. I like his style.
We met in town and then went back to hear Merlin's HiFi.
First impressions are important.
I think this HiFi is worth more than my home sez I!
There where some familiar components such as a Passlabs XVR1 active crossover, 1500AL JBL woofers, Tad 4003 drivers , Tad tweeters and a Tad Horn. I did not completely figure out his hifi rack but there were some nice OLT valve amps.
We listened. I was spell bound by the silky midrange, spine tingling highs and the riveting bass dynamics. Very nice indeed...and huge potential.
Rich was right...it was Tadilating!
Our Merlin has been developing his speaker system for a while and is investiging a suitable arrangement for positioning the drivers for optimum listening angle.
Please let us know how it develops. Sorry I don't have a pic.

Back to London.
Of course we talked about nothing but audio on the way home.
The next day we would see the arrival of our friends from far a field.
While we all have our own JBL journey it was a unique opportunity to share our experiences and our passion.
The JBL Sound.
By this stage I had heard 3 pairs of 4345's on this trip. Bo's updated vintage 45's, Rick fine reproductions and Rich's diy darlings. While I am certain there are no doubt better loudspeakers available today it would require an all or nothing approach and a serious amount of cash make the jump worthwhile.

Ian,
that weekend was a lot of fun.It gets pretty lonely here with this Tannoy mob. I stand proud, firm and defiant in the face woofer envy and the subsequent jibes.
Our MYSTIC MERLIN is in the land of the rising sun as we speak .... I wonder what he'll come back with this time ???
Rich
Rich,
Sounds like you need watering!
