just finished up Carlos Santana & Wayne Shorter Live at the 1988 Montreux Jazz Festival. This is like 3 supergroups in one and the sound is amazing.

This turned out to be one hell of a DVD. Brian has always found interesting musicians to work with. He continues in this tradition with two of his kids and a bass player I never heard of. Savannah Auger on vocals is unconventional, I hear influences from Stevie Nicks to Flora Purim among others. I enjoy the way she messes with my head. Karma D. Auger on drums is intricate, precise and dynamic. He played some killer solos and always complemented the rest of the band. Derek Franks is a monster on bass -- compare to Stanley Clark and Jaco Pastorious. I got the DVD very quickly from brianauger.com on Wednesday, but I was too beat from work to listen then. I retired from the working world on Friday and to celebrate I played it while in a somewhat altered state. Brian is playing better than ever on these new versions of tunes done by older incarnations on the Express. This is one ass kicking band.
I couldn’t have picked a better disc to celebrate retirement with. Brian’s music has always made me feel good and even after all these years, he really outdid himself with this one. My receiver defaults to PLll Movie and my JBLs earned their keep and a whole lot more with the 24 bit DVD sound on this disk.
Also, picked up Santana's "Hymns for Peace" live at Montreux 2004 DVD. Think of this one as Santana's allstar big band. The orchestration was very well done, it never became too busy or overproduced. He used it in many different variations from smaller groups to full power to produce an incredible variation of sounds and settings for his music. He had a spectacular line up of musicians and he used his band very, very well to get the best from all of them. These releases are are like manna from heaven for those of us who long for the old Santana. I hope he puts out more of these.

It is pricey and I don't think it will play on our DVD players here thanks to good old region codes. It seems like something worth checking out, but first I would want to be sure I could play it.

i believe that a lot of music dvd's aren't region specific but if they say it is i would probably expect it to be so.i really have no experience with allmusic except for the review books.i think ill wait for it to show up in the us,as often times ill buy the big buck import only to see it at hmv a month later for a third of the price

Jaco's stuff has been somewhat inconsistant. He is amazing with Weather Report on "8:30 Live". I found the "Jaco Pastorius" self titled album dissapointing. I have other CDs where he sat in for 1 or 2, and on these, he is awesome. On the 1982 DVD, the price has come down and it is easily available. I would love to get more vintage Jaco, but I'm not sure if this is it. He was already going downhill. I would really like to get more DVDs, these things are a lot of fun and the 24 bit sound is a rush. I will probably take a chance on this one in the next few months.
