    opinions ? Onix/Hafler amp/pre

I cant find much on these, looks tempting on first glance. Here is CL ad.

    Onix A2150 Amp and Hafler SE100 Pre-amp - $250

Both are high end pieces of gear that sound fantastic together. The Onix is a full dual mono amp with two power supplies etc... It puts out 120 watts into 8 ohms but with it's high current design feels much more powerful and will drive just about any loudspeaker. It is currently running a pair of notoriosly difficult to drive Magnepan Mg-1 speakers in a large room with the kind of poise expected from a well designed amp. The dual VU meters glow a soft blue which is a nice touch. The review below compares it to Creek and Krell.

The Hafler is an evolution of the famous DH110 but with JFET transistors. It is very lively and dynamic with lots of detail without sounding harsh or artificial. I am only selling this combination to fund a tube amp purchase.

i think for that kind of cash give them a listen and if they are not too baffed out and sound good you will always be able to get out of them without a loss.they probably will sound good with at least one pair of speakers in the herd out there

The Onix sounds like a pretty lookin' amp - I like the dual guages and it says they are blue-illuminated. Could be very nice looking, but - it is an unknown quantity. Its an oddball, and like the review says, Onix has the world's worst marketing strategy - but it sure sounds interesting.

Its hard to go wrong for that kind of money ... if thats enough power for you.

I think the earlier Yamaha receivers are in that price range as well - say, CR-1020 or 2020 models - I believe they are discrete transistor amps stages instead of the later IC amps most manufacturers went to.
I've seen a number of them for sale out west lately.

I may not know much, but I know these dimensions aren't right:
    Onix two-ways called Reference 1 MkII. As a single-wire rear-ported 4-ohm design of 29" D x 20" W x 37" and 20 lbs,

checked them out yesterday. sounded fine . pretty amp , cool meters, but you dont HEAR meters , and my amp is hidden down in the cabinet.

amp was Taiwan made, cudnt find any real info in it, and seems to only be sold by av123.com.

problem was ...they just wernt an improvement over the BGW/hafler combo that I have now. And somebody had inflated the sellers dreams and he wud not bargain, so I walked away.

my setup aint pretty , but it sure sounds pretty.

    ONIX amp

I have one of these amps, they are the same as the Proton a2120 power amp. It works very well and I am hearing more detail then my Denon POA1500, WOW! Also, if anyone has the matching preamp, onix or proton, please let me know!
