Currently available E140 replacement?

Once upon a time, I was told that there was another JBL speaker which was "really the same" as the E140, only without the pretty dust cap.

Fast forward...
I now have an older bass guitar cabinet loaded with two very nice E140-8's. Really love it.

I have a chance to pick up another cabinet which matches the other, but it's loaded with some other crappy 15 inch woofers.

I'd like to make the sound and efficency of the two cabinets match. I know the E140 is NLA, but was wondering if there is a currently produced JBL product which matches the E140, without the pretty dust cap?

This has probably been covered here before...sorry if that's the case.

Hi Dave,

Depending on what you're after, I have 2 NIB E140's. Old 2225H is -similar- to a
E140 w/paper cap. 2226H is a newer/current option... there are/were some b-stock
units available at jblpro.com web site. -grumpy

I was looking at the 2226H as a possibility.

What I don't understand is, there seems to be a 3db difference in efficency...100 for the E140, and 97 for the 2225/6H. Were the E series speakers rated differently?

The Fs also seems a good bit different...32hz for the E140, and 40 for the 2226. (In these small cabinets, 40hz might actually tune better)

Could these speakers really sound the same?

Are your E140's 8 ohms?
What would you take for them?

Different design tradeoffs are bound to make for variations in sensitivity.
There are probably clues as to why the efficiency numbers are different in
the T/S parameters ('fraid I don't memorize them... but you can find them here).
E140 is specifically a musical instrument driver, 2226 a mid-bass PA driver,
as was the 2225. I don't claim that they'd sound the same. They kind of cover
a similar range.

If I recall correctly, Drew Daniels (someone with access to just about any JBL
driver) said he was using a pair of 2227's for his bass rig... go figure.

From memory, the 2225 when measured, was swept from 100Hz to 500Hz instead of the usual 1KHz steady test tone. Consequently, the "apparent" sensitivity was lower but in reality, the 22xx series outperform there "E" series brothers as low frequency speakers.
