    4333A Questions

I recently bought a pair of 4333a (I was looking for these since i had listened them 25 years ago...but they were out of price for me at this time) and have some questions to get them back to their original shape :

    - the 2405 and 2420 are 16 ohms, and the 15" (non originals) are 2105h 8 ohms.
Is it still possible to find 2131 ? does someone knows where ?
Is it necessary to find them in 16 ohms ?
What the 2105 were used for ?
    Would a replacement of the 2105 by 2135 be 'heretic' if i don't find 2131 ?

    - They are grey studio finished and would need a new painting : does someone knows the exact reference of the JBL studio grey ?

Thanks in advance to the group for your help !

    Hi Cruising,

the drivers in the original are 2405 (8Ohm), 2420 (16Ohm) and 2231 (8Ohm). The crossover is the 3133A.
    You can substitute drivers like this: 2420 ---> 2421 (but always 16Ohm), 2231 ---> 2235 (8Ohm)
Please post the serial numbers for further informations......and some pics will be nice.

    regards
    HP

Hi. I do not know how the 2105? will sound in 4333 boxes. Maybe somebody else here knows. The first thing I would have done is to get a pair of 2235H. You should probably listen very carefully to the 2405 and 2420 and figure out if they need new diaphgrams.

When everything is ok I would veneer them instead of paint them, but that's me.

I'm guessing it's 2205, since cruising is erroneously calling his 22s as 21s, and wondering if that's one of the drivers that can be reconed as 2235H.

Don't remember, but the list is in these forums....

    4333 Questions...

    Thanks for your answers !

If I resume a right configuration would be :
    - 2405 8 ohms
    - 2420 16 ohms
    - 2235 8 ohms in place of the originals 2231

I just made a mesure of my 2405 witch are 16 ohms : they rate for 6,1 and 6,3 ohms. How is this possible ?

The serial numbers are on the cabinets (4303A-3) are 11417 & 11479

For painting I agree with you, but when I bought them, they had been painted with a brush in an outrageous black...that i removed, but not quite well.

I try to attach different pictures

One more time : thanks for your help !

You are reading DC resistance, not impedance. Don't worry about it. They are all the same.

Do you confirm the woofers are 2205?

The woofers are 2205, and they have been reconed in 2205h

I try to join a picture...It seems to work when i reduce size.

Your 2205H frames are exactly the same frames as used in the 136H, 2231H and 2235H woofers. If you recone them with 2235H kits (mass rings installed) you will have a perfectly fine set of vintage monitors with updated woofers.

Your 16 ohm 2405s are correct for the vintage of your system. JBL has called the 2405 both 8 ohms and 16 ohms over the years... they are all the same and are actually just slightly over 8 ohms, but you don't need to worry about this... it would only matter if you started building custom networks.
