Non JBL/Altec Driver with 511B horn

Has anyone had any success or satisfaction using a non JBL or Altec driver using a 511B horn? If so which types. ( With due respect to this forum.)

    Thank-you

Cyclotronguy uses a TAD 1" driver on his 511Bs and likes the combo quite a lot.

    And P-audio too

And in the workshop Cyclotronguy has a pair of P-audio Neo compression drivers that he likes just fine too. They are the model 450's, purchased new from Speaker City at a fraction of the cost for used TAD 2001's

What's wrong with using JBL or Altec however? It's difficult to get anything I know of new at a price that clean used Altec or JBL can be bought for. JBL's and Altec's have the advantage of replacement parts.

Be aware of the horn flare differences

A JBL driver on a 511B/811B will not necessarily sound better than a Altec 800/900 series 1" driver.

Also, the Altec drivers tend to not sound as good on the JBL horns.

Both were designed with different purposes in mind.

Using a non JBL/Altec driver on either may work but might not be optimum.

YMMV being the disclaimer of course!

A buddy uses emenince drivers on his Altec horns and reports wonderfull sound. I have not heard them but he claims there are charts or graphs at the eminence site showing very favorable curves. Could be worth a listen.
